This is my first post here. I've been lurking for a little while. I have yet to actually start turning. So far all I have is a harbor freight set of turning tools and a handful of pen kits that were on sale. I was originally looking at a small floor-standing lathe like a Jet 12x36, but I have had a hard time scraping money together. So, I'll probably end up getting a benchtop, about 10x16, if I ever do get one, as a starter. I love watching people turn, but I really don't know any turners personally. I've done a lot of reading, but it it doesn't make much sense since I haven't put it to use yet.

I would suggest trying to get involved with a local woodturner's club. You can check the AAW website to locate one in your area. Feel free to ask questions and to share your knowledge as well. Some of this art takes technical knowledge but a lot just takes good common woodworking sense. See you around.

I live in Barrie ON. Canada
I've had a 12" Delta for approx. 4yrs. I bought it used with about a dozen tools.
I turned two sets of table legs and then didn't do any turning until lately.
I've started making what I call pretty firewood. My favorite wood is whatever is on the firewood pile.
I just wanted to thank-you all. I have learned lots from this site and gotten lots of inspiration/motivation. Having fun turning eggs, mushrooms, bowls, candlesticks. I only get to turn about 2-3 hrs/week.

I just thought I would throw my introduction in the pot. My name is Javier and I got my first lathe in late January. I work with a psi turncrafter and my tools are just a set that I picked up at harbor freight for 50 bucks. I started out making wine bottles, mushrooms and baseball bats. Now I have move on to boxes and bowls. Also I have started to sell some of my pieces but with the wood supply running low I have been looking in to segmented turning with the scraps I have collected. I'm from Holland, you know, that nice little country on the other side of the pond.
