I cant believe it!!
Aug 25th, 2005 at 6:15pm

Today I was turning some spalted pecan I had got from a friend today. I figgered I give the log turnin a go, and my 14 yr old boy came out and saw the piece and said "Wow...thats pimpin....I wanna try it.!!
I immediatly stop what I was doin and grabbed the 4' limb I had (about 6" diameter) and choped a chunk off. I told Jeff the first thing is to strip all the bark. He took the chisel and started strippin!!.
I mounted it up and he turned it down to a 4 " cylinder using the gouge and then the skew in no time (The boy scares me) He then tells me he wants to make a small lidded box!!!(not in so little words tho!!)
We where cut short by the wife callin us both in at 9:15  Shocked
   This is gonna be fun

You strip all of your bark off before mounting on the lathe?  I suppose you should if you don't wear a face shield or if it's particularly large loose pieces that can fly off.

It was kinda rotten bark and very nasty. It came right off with a chisel, so I figgered that was better than wearing all that nastyness. Twas full of bugs too.

small pieces like that I throw in the microwave and nuke it to kill the bugs.   One thing is it sure makes the little wife mad if caught.  Now I have my own microwave in the shop thanks to the new one my wife made me buy last year.

Kids will surprise you Jeff, just when you think they could care less.  I hope he keeps it up.

One can go to one's local thrift store and by a used, shop, microwave for $10.00 or less. Is $10.00 worth peace in the family? I thought it was. Grin

It's pretty cool to see/hear about all of the younger turners you guys and gals are bringing up.  Maybe there's a future WR manager in one of them...  Wink

I am happy for you. I love when my daughter turns with me and hope my son will as well. Great fun for the family.
