The lathe it goes a wonderin'
Aug 27th, 2005 at 1:45pm

I roughed up another big bowl (started at 20 inches and was down to just over 18 by the time I was done roughing it.  And what a time I had, that big PM was walking to beat all heck.  My blank was round but heavy on one end (majorly so.  My fault for cutting it that way I guess).  No matter how level I seem to get the lathe of adjust the feet it will still walk.
My question to you all is, short of a couple hundred pounds of sand (I already have about 300 pounds of rock salt for my water softener stored on a board across the legs.)  what other trick can one employ to stop or reduce he walking.  would getting rubber pads under the lathe help or maybe some rubber furniture feet?  Has anyone bolted theirs to their floor, wood or concrete?  Some ideas please.  I got lots of big wood out there to turn.

If the floor is concrete then bolt the (edited out) to the floor.

Bolt it down or let your lovely bride teach you how to dance (follow). Put on a little lively music and just cha-cha across the floor with it!

I know the feeling. Right now I am on a wooden floor in my shop, and the lathe is rock steady, but the floor wobbles under load. Quite a site, the lathe moving to and fro with the bandsaw on one side and the sharpening stand on the other move opposite but in time. I need to video that.

Mine will move if I turn the speed up high when the block is unbalenced.  I just turn down the speed just before walking and go from there as it gets more in balance I turn it up a little more.

But it's fun to watch it chase the dog around the shop Grin

TC, I also do what you do but sometimes you need a bit more speed to get some, decent cutting going.

Just Kidding you a little Philip.  I have had mine move around and almost unplugged itself a couple of times.  When you get that 7/8 bowl gouge out and start hogging the wood it moves on it own.  Maybe I need to use less pressure.  But you sure get a lot of chips fast.

That's a heck of a gouge TC.  I don't recall if I have ever seen one that size.

I got it from the Serious Lathe Company.  I only use it for roughing.  Had to make my own handle and that is a big chunk of wood in itself.
