Void and Crack Filler Materials
Sep 4th, 2005 at 9:12am

This is just an "FYI" alert.
I have used brass shavings, just plain CA glue, sawdust, and Turquoise to fill cracks and voids in some of my pieces, all with no problems.
The place where I buy my Turquoise chips was out of stock, so I purchased a small bottle of CARNELIAN (an orangeish-red mineral) to crush, and test filling a crack. Well, it was a bit more difficult to crush into a coarse powder than Turquoise, and not as pretty. I filled a couple cracks in a Maple bowl with the crushed Carnelian and dripped in some thin CA. The real revelation came when I tried to level the overfilled cracks by power sanding with a 2" disk. The Carnelian is quite a bit harder (Mohs 6.5 to 7.0) than Turquoise (Mohs 5.0 to 6.0), and wears out sanding disks very fast, so I tried an HSS gouge and scraper. The Carnelian took a freshly ground edge off the gouge AND the scraper in about 3 seconds flat. The only tool that kept its edge was an old file that was ground into a scraper form.
From know on I will check the Mohs number on the crack fillers I buy (or try coffee).

Gil, these guys told me you have to use unused coffee, and still am not sure I am willing to make that leap! Shocked

Ned, that sounds almost sacrilegious. Maybe I could buy a can of “el'cheapo” coffee, and test that in a crack. I wonder if used grounds could be spread out to dry, and then used as filler, after all, they are still brown.

In my limited experience, I have not used fresh coffee.  I dry out used grounds and they seem to work just fine.  Like Gil says, they're still brown.

GIl - absolutely nothing to do with your post as far as filling wood goes,  just a coincidence. A book I'm reading ( OK, I hear the laughter, get it out of your system, I actually do other things than turning, sacrelidge I know)concerning the ancient Anasazi Indians talks about skulls being found and having carnelian inlaid in the teeth. OK, that's out of my system. Back to turning.

If any one is in need of the Anasazi tooth filling mineral, Carnelian, I just happen to have a few ounces of it.   Grin
