just a lathe??
Sep 18th, 2005 at 10:37pm

recently it has come to my attention that a lathe can be more than just a lathe. i saw a lathe with what looked like a built in grinding stone on the opposite side of the headstock business end.

i also recently read (i think on ebay) about a lathe that had a "sander" attachment???

what cool tools/attachments can you get for a jet 1236??

A lot of them you can make for yourself.

The sanding disk is easy, just cut a circle of plywood or MDF, drill holes and mount it to a face plate.  Use stick on disks of an appropriate size and grit.

I have used a expandable rubber drum sander mounted in a Jacobs chuck with a MT2 taper on the back.  I backed that up with a wooden cone on the tailstock to help constrain the lateral forces.

As you get into turning, you will see more ideas like that on various web sites.  Look at our project page.

When I used to do segmented projects, I needed to sand the two halfs flat before glueing them together, I couldn't find a sander big enough, so I made a large sanding disk Like JimQ. It worked perfectly. You can use the lathe to mount your buffing wheels also. I have also seen attachments that can hold your turning tools to sharpen them. Can't remember where though..

You must learn from the mistakes of others, you can't possibly live long enough to make them all yourself.&&
