New American Tool Company - New Info...
Oct 2nd, 2005 at 9:59am

Hey Gang,

Based on the responses I received here and on Wood Central I made some calls and sent some emails and here is what I found.

CET, a company based right here in the US has purchased Glaser tools and will continue to produce and enhance the line with the same high standards that Jerry has used all these years.  That's right, we'll still have an American tool company!  Here is the kicker...According to Paulo Marin, CEO of CET, the company is not only going to continue where Jerry left off, but they have brought Stuart Batty onboard to design a new line of tools.  It seems that they took it to the next level, by adding new metals, new handle designs and are expanding into areas of woodturning that Jerry hadn't previously explored. All I could get from him about this new line is that it will be called CRYOSTEEL.

I'm pretty excited about this. We have all heard of Stuart's capabilities and experience. Paulo Marin, has told me that Stuart has finalized the design and prototypes of this new line of tools and he was given the “go ahead” to create it from scratch to his specs and vision with no barriers.

Think about it, combine Stuart's 30+ years of turning and tool knowledge with the superior metals and technology Glaser has always used and then ADVANCE it...I already can see I'm going to have to make more room on my tool wall...

I'll pass more info on as I get it.  This is going to be HUGE!

keep the bevel rubbing,
Chris

Chris, perhaps I can help w/the term CRYOSTEEL. I assume it's steel that has been CRYO-Tempered. That is tempered in a liquid such as liquid nitrogen. Cryo-tempering tends to "line up" the molecules w/in the steel resulting in a super hard but not brittle tool.

"Mother Necessity" invented a cryo-tempering protocol that I've been using for about 3 years to "harden" carbon steel tools.

I believe a US manufacturer of hand plane blades was using the "cryo-steel" process a few years ago. Never used one, but it sounded good.

Bud, how cold does the steel have to get and for how long?   8)

Doug, liquid nitrogen is -321° F.  I think that is what they use in cryosteel tempering.

"A2 is one of the steels that respond well to Cryogenic Treatment. This extreme cold treatment (-320F) increases the steel’s toughness without any decrease in hardness. You get increased wear resistance without any increase in brittleness so a Cryogenically treated blade will hold its edge longer. You can keep working instead of sharpening."

Chris - I met Paulo Marin at Provo last year. Stu introduced him as his business partner and freind. Very nice guy. My wife and I had lots of fun with them while we were there. Now you know why Stu moved to L.A. As I mentioned in a different thread, I've seen some of Stu's new tools. It will be interesting to see what else comes out.

Now that you mentioned his name, I remember this guy Paulo Marin from Kansas City. I remember him saying that he was determined to build an American tool company. He looked very sincere and willing to bring a fresh approach to woodturning. It seemed to me he was a genuine guy. I wish him all the luck. He got my support on "keep in in america". I also saw him playing piano with Bonnie Klein. It looked like they were having fun. Could there be anything else there? Does anybody know if there are any plans between his company and Bonnie?   ??? Wink
