Gazebo Finial Finish

What would be the best finish for a gazebo finial to protect it from the weather?  Any comments appreciated.

I've never used it, but there's a product called marine spar varnish that is supposed to be very durable.

Rick's right on! 1 coat of sealer, 0000 steel wool, marine varnish, 0000 steel wool, and one more coat of varnish.

Well, I went to the hardware store up the road from me and they didn't have the Marine Varnish.  I will have to try some other places.  I just have to find the time to do it.

Could it also be called spar varnish?  I have seen that at Home Depot and Lowes and I am sure other hardware and such stores would carry it.

No matter what you apply, it will not last out in the weather and UV light. It would be simpler to soak it in Tung or Linseed oil for a day or two, wipe it down and let it cure inside the wood. Then just reoil it every 4 or 6 months. That way you will not have a surface film buildup to start pealing off and looking bad; the oil will just soak in.

Minwax has a relatively new product made just for outdoor furniture.  See your local Minwax dealer and ask about it.  They'll be able to show you what it is.   8)

Ah well.. I bought the Helmsmans Spar Varnish.  I put 3 coats on the finial.  Turned out nice.  My g/f's grandparents are in their 80's.  Hopefully this will last awhile before it needs to be redone as they live a few hours away.  I doubt they can get up there and refinish it themselves and me and heights don't get along.  :-D
