You'll need a pen turning mandrel and a few other things. A starter kit has most of it..

A simple pen can be turned in 15 minutes or less, fancy ones can take as long as you want to keep adding detail.

I guess you could if you're steady with a hand drill. Drilling the blank for the brass tube is pretty critical to a nice pen.

I suppose you could but a drill press for me doubles as a pen press.  Speaking of pen....  I sold 10 in the past week!!!  Hmmm... what new toy can I get now!!!!  Cheesy

Speaking of pen press... couldn't the lathe be used as a pen press too?  Maybe with a jig turned with a mt?  Then using the tailstock to apply the pressure...

I drill some blanks on the lathe using my talon chuck with spigot jaws and a jacobs chuck in the tail stock.  I used my drill press to assemble the pens for a long time.  I covered a bolt head with leather so it wouldn't scratch the finish on the parts and put it in the chuck.

Yes, Jr, it is. As Smokey said, buy a jacobs chuck w/the taper of your tailstock (M2, I think) and drill the blanks on your lathe. That's how I drilled mine for over a year.

Junior, you could also buy pre-drilled blanks from hut supplies.

I use a small bar clamp with rubber pads as a pen press.

I took an old vice, screwed pine on the metal faces and now have wood faces and use the vise as a press. I also use my drill press as a pen press and it is faster and easier, but can't sit in the living room with me while I watch a movie Wink

I have one, just no where to sit!

Actually, I was planning on taking an old vcr out there with an old tv so I could watch turning videos while at the lathe. The VCR died before it got there, so the TV hasn't be turned on in a year.
