steady rest for spindle work
Oct 30th, 2005 at 3:41pm

I need to get hold of a steady rest for some spindle work that I am attempting to do.  The pieces have very long, thin stems that begin to whip so much that I can't turn them.  I am aware of the Dominic Greco article for building one, downloaded from WoodCentral, but it doesn't give enough construction detail for me.  And there is supposed to be a set of plans in some issue of American Woodworker, but it doesn't want to come up on their site.  I would be happy to buy one if the price were right.  I have checked Craft Supply as well as Woodcraft.  Any ideas would be appreciated.

Jim, I'll send you the plans that I have. It can be made very easily, or you can get carried away. Both ways give about the same results. You could turn your own wooden wheels, and glue a rubber or neoprene boot on them, or use roller blade wheels.

Watch your email. Three letters/files are heading south.

If Gil's plans aren't what you need, I've got both detail plans that Dominic Greco sent me, suitable for his Jet 1642,  and a copy of the American Woodworker article available.  I had always seen references to that article, but could never find it either.  I finally found a guy in Texas who had a copy and graciously passed it along.

Rick, I would love to have a copy of that American Woodworker article in issue 84, pages 110-114, and those other detailed plans, if you do not mind. My email address is in my profile.

Rick, I would very much appreciate your sending me the American Woodworker article as I am sure that it has all of the demensions, etc.  I will be more than glad to cover any costs incurred in sending it.  Or could you just scan it to my email address (jcmaloney@hotmail.com)?  Thanks in advance.

Hey Gil, great idea re:  make the wheels and put on some "tires."  Especially helpful for here as there is not a big market for used inline skate wheels...

Thanks,

Jim

u-dog, I've sent Gil and Jim the plans.  I'll shoot them to you also.  Look for e-mails this afternoon/evening.

Thanks,

I've got them, but I didn't have a chance to look at them yet. Gotta finish painting this kitchen for the lovely wife  Kiss...

And the new lathe sits there...

Waaahhh... Cry
