Hi, all:
New to the forum.  I followed a link from another forum referencing the bracelet article and stayed to look around.  Smiley
I have been turning for about 10-12 years and about a year ago I upgraded from my old Delta 46-700 to a Nova DVR.  It really does make a difference.  Cheesy

Take care

Welcome Bob and I sincerly hope this is not the last we hear from you.  With that much experience I am sure you have a lot to offer.  I think you will find we are a pretty friendly group and always welcome new input.  Don't forget to check out or photo sharing area and let us see some of your work.

Hi, Philip, and thanks:
The dovetail bowl is a bit of an optical delusion.  Smiley  It is just made using the old "bowl from a board" technique, but a sliding dovetail is machined into the board edges before the rings are cut.  I have a pictorial essay on the technique on my website at:

Welcome on board, Bob.  I am a relative newbie to turning (3 months), but your work has given me some new ideas.  Particularly the dovetail bowl, knew there would be a use for that big router I've got. Grin

I just perused through that piece on the dovetail bowl but I can tell you that I am looking forward to reading it in detail later.  It sets my mind a blaze with ideas and variations (so I can't be accused of copying someone else  Roll Eyes)

Welcome and I can't wait to see more. You have a very nice site and I like the dovetail Idea, I never would have thought of that.

My goodness!

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome.  While I have been turning for that long, I am only a hobby turner and there have been frequent periods when my lathe has sat for months without being used while I was working on some other project.  In other words "I ain't no guru..."  Cheesy

I probably should have posted that dovetail bowl in the "Oops" gallery, as you will know if you have read the article about its construction.  The rim turned out reasonably well given how little I had to work with, but the real problem with it is that I got in a hurry and did the finish turning before the glue had really had enough time to cure.  I used regular yellow woodworking glue on that one and did the finish turning about 8 hours after I glued it up.  The glue held fine, but when the moisture finished coming out of the wood it left the glue line proud at every joint.  It is not visible but it is quite noticeable to the touch.  I suppose I could re-mount it and re-sand it, if I ever get one of those round tuit thingys.  Smiley

The basic "bowl from a board" technique is one I read about and tried back when I first started turning, but had almost forgotten about until my wife got this old bowl out of the cupboard a month or two back and reminded me:

That one is white ash and done without the dovetail variation.  I think it was the second or third bowl I ever turned.  It is over 10 years old and still holding up well.  It is wonderful the way you can turn such a large bowl from a single board foot of lumber, but the possible shapes are kind of limited.

Anyway, thanks for the warm welcome and I hope I can contribute something to the forum.

Take care
Bob
