Prepping wood for the torch
Nov 20th, 2005 at 7:46am

I've got a small plain maple vase.  I'd like to carve (using a Dremel) the top and make it curvy/wavey, then burn that edge with a propane torch for effect.

What do I need to do to prep the rest of the vase.  Seal it first, then carve/burn?  Then sand and finish?  Or just carve and burn, then do all my finishing?

Raw wood, Rick, unless you're fond of the "no eyebrow & eyelash" look.  Shocked

How about doing the carving and burning while the vase is still in the rough stage, then finish turn it so the edge is nice and crisp. Just an idea that popped into my head.

Ken, it's too late for the rough stage, I'm wanting to carve away some small cracks that have appeared at the top of the completed vase.  I think I banged the rim while hollowing and caused them, don't know for sure.  But that is a good idea.

Bare wood it is, as I'd like to keep all the hair that I have in place, thank you.   It makes sense once I think about it anyway.

thanks guys for the tips.
