PW 3520A headstock problem?
May 29th, 2006 at 3:49pm

I would like to know if anyone else has heard about a potentially serious problem.  I have just heard that the headstock of the 3520A may be developing cracks and come completely apart.

I read about that a few days ago, and I believe the part that cracked was the round piece of cast steel (called a clamp) that locks the headstock to the bed ways. Also, I think that the problem was in early model lathes. When I find the article, I will post where it is.

The problem was in the first year or two of production only.  If your machine is fairly new you have nothing to worry about.   8)

Had mine a little over a year and still going strong, no cracks that I know of.

I have had my PM3520A for about 6 years, and it was one of the earlier models. The pressure plate on the headstock was made from cast iron. I broke mine while coring some black locust. Fortunatly, it didn't fall off the lathe, and damage me or the headstock. PM sent me a replacement plate, which didn't actually fit because it was thicker than the origional plate, and the bolt on the bottom wasn't long enough. My neighbor, in the mean time, welded two strips on a piece of flat bar stock, and I am still using it today. The plate on the models now is the same one that is on the tailstock and banjo.

What is the difference between the 3520A vs. 3520B?

And what would be considered a really good buy? Roll Eyes

The A is an earlier model, the B is the current model.

Like Jim said the A is an earlier model and there are a few differences between the two.  I doubt that you will be able to find a new A model still for sale, you might fnd a used one.  I would definitely get a B model if I did not already own an A.  Love the lathe anf if i win one of the five Oneway's they are giving away at the symposium this month I will still keep my Powermatic.
