Reply #4 - Sep 26^th, 2007 at 4:32pm My dad bought 5/32 or 3/16 steel rod and drove it into a predrilled hole, and then ground a point on it. You can form a ferrule with a copper fitting to keep the handle from splitting. JimQ

Jim's answer is a likely best option for a longer spike. you know, they do sell pre-crushed ice now...

Reply #6 - Sep 26^th, 2007 at 5:15pm Just thought of something...contact Craft Supplies customer service and see if they have the replacement parts for sale separate of the kit (they do that with their pen kits). If so, buy all the parts but the spike, and then make your own spike(s). you'd get the fancy hardware with the length of the spike you want...couldn't hurt to try.

Yes, I know you can buy ice. And you can have a crappy ice maker in your fridge (we do! Cheesy

) But we still end up having to make 'extra' ice in two liter coke bottles to have enough.

I will give Craft Supply a call too on getting 'spare' parts, thanks for that suggestion

I could write a book on making scratch awls and ice picks. I've probably made and sold nearly 200 since 1996. My suggestion would be to find an old HSS aircraft bit from 3/16" to 1/4" (the long bits). They easily cut with a decent hacksaw blade, so cut it off to your desired length. My next suggestion would be to chuck one end in an electric hand drill and rotate against a slower moving grinding wheel so as not to adversely effect the bits' temper. Turn until you've achieved the point you want. They rechuck into a Jacobs chuck in your headstock and polish with 100 to 1200 grit, this won't rust if you've used good HSS and clean it off after each use. I generally will use brass, nickel silver or copper as a ferrule material and silver solder it to the blade/shaft. That option is up to you. Then turn your handle to you desired size and shape. I usually center drill the handle while it's chucked with a Jacobs chuck in the tailstock. Good luck
