Finishes to use over dye
Oct 13th, 2007 at 7:56pm

I'm curious what y'all use.  I have been hesitant to finish a piece that is dyed because I'm using two different woods and I'm nervous about smearing the dye if I use an oil or wipe on finish.

Thanks for your help  Cool

I have never been crazy about dyes, but with an oil finish the ones you may want to watch out for are the dyes with red in them, like mahogony. If you don't know what type of dye has been used,I would stay away from it as you may end up ruining a nice piece,or just sand as smooth as possable the use a wax type finish.

I have used oil based dye, then after half hour used sanding sealer, next day beal buffed and as long as I don't really try to burn in the buffs I get no residue on the buffs.

The best answer I can give you is to test your finish on scrap wood that has been dyed.

How about a spray finish?  I've had success with Deft spray;  light coats, dries in less than an hour, doesn't smear the dye.
