Tried a new finish system this evening.
Jan 5th, 2008 at 11:16pm

I spun up a few pens this evening & had a couple thoughts. Nothing too serious that a few Advil won't relieve. Grin Grin

Anywho,, I read where someone mentioned melting plexiglass in acetone & brushing it on. I've also read about CA finishes & the application methods. What I tried was a CA finish with a different applicator. I should have asked 1st but that just isn't my style.  Grin Grin  I used wax paper to apply the CA. I put 4 drops on the wax paper then ran it back & forth several times with the lathe spinning on high speed. I left the lathe running with the shop vac keeping the dust off the finished piece for 5 minutes. When I shut the lathe down I was surprised. Shocked What a deep shine I had!! I finished over the top with 2 coats of ShellaWax & applied friction to heat it up per the directions. Glass like finish ,, for me anyhow,, with an incredible shine!!

Did I do OK here or am I missing something & will live to regret this idea??

Thanks!!

Sounds like you did fine.  Another applicator that I use when I'm doing cob pens is the little plastic bags in the pen kit.  There are usually way too many of them and one will fit on the end of my finger pretty well.  No added cost and they work well.

What consistency of CA glue did you use?  The only thing that I can see that could possibly happen is that you can accidentally glue your bushings to your blanks, if any excess glue spins off into the seams.  (DAMHIKT)

And hopefully you remember to stand to the side and not in direct line with the spinning pen.

Especially putting CA on at high speed it will fly all over make sure you wear a face shield you don't want to glue your lips together. Grin

Thanks!! These are the answers I was hoping to get!! I did stand off to the side when I applied the CA. Actually I stand just to the side anyhow even when I apply the ShellaWax & buff it out. Now that I think about it,, I don't get directly in front of the turning until after I have a workable cylinder on the lathe either.

I just used the regular CA from Lowes. I think it's the fast drying type.

lubbing5-- Here's a link to the waxpaper. It's is used in baking/cooking applications & glue doesn't stick to the paraffin wax.

Shocked You're missing one of the best parts of the turning experience.  Having those curls hit you on the faceshield and getting all caught up in your chest hair.  What a RUSH!!!   Cheesy Cool
