I am turning a stemmed bowl out of oak.    I have a star in the wood and i would like to keep it as a feature.  anybody got any ideas how i can keep it and stop the chipping.

I would have to say make sure that you have a really sharp tool. although I'm still kinda new at this that seems to be the general consensus when it come to shipping, tearout, etc.

Unsure what you mean by having a star in the wood, but if it's chipping out you could possibly coat it with thin CA glue.  That should strengthen the fibers.

Like "leofrilot", I'm not sure I understand what you mean by "star" but it suggests and end grain element (like the union between what was the base of a limb exiting the trunk, another limb, etc.) and I'd suggest you make certain that your tool is VERY sharp and that you take very light cuts.
