For those of you who turn pens, what is your prefered finish?

You asked a few days too early.  Assuming you are talking about wood - I have pretty much done sanding sealer/friction polish/wax finishes before.  However, I am in the process of doing three "identical" rosewood pens that will each have a different finish to see what I like best - one like I just described, a CA/BLO finish, and an enduro finish.  I will get back with you shortly (which may be a coupe of weeks at the rate I have been turning).

That's a good idea.  We will await with eager anticipation.

I use the Mylands Sealer, then their Friction Polish, then Carnuba bar wax followed by a light polish of Renaissance wax.

I use Mylands Friction polish on most pens.  Snakewood and burls, I use thin CA to seal and follow with Mylands.

I sand to 12000, apply EEE two coats, apply Shellawax two coats, then finish with renassance wax.

iF i'M MAKING A PEN FOR SOMEONE SPECIAL & they like very shiny finish I do a CA finish. but it also has a plastic feel to it. I prefer a friction finish so I can feel the warmth of the wood.

A different option:
I've used the PPP sticks from Hut for the last 4 years with excellent results.
The pen I carry daily has held up for at least three years through all sorts of abuse, including sweat, water and dirt.
I apply three coats of each, reversing the lathe with each application.
I've sold a couple of hundred or so with no complaints or call backs.
And I only turn wood pens, so I don't know about plastics.

I started with Shellawax & the HUT brown & cream bars followed by 3 coats of carnauba wax buffed on. I've tried different ways since then & have settled on the CA/BLO for now. My original finish was too slippery & the ladies at the bank my Wife works at gave me feed back where it was hard to hold the pen.  Grin
