Abralon question
Mar 13th, 2008 at 4:25pm

So that I wouldn't hijack Leo's MM thread I've started a new one to ask a question concerning Abralon.  Bud mentioned going with Abralon exclusively so that he can blow it out and keep on going.  I understand that part of it.  Love the stuff because of that.  However, what grit does it go up to?  I was under an understanding that the grits were limited and really did not go nearly as fine as MM.  Am I wrong in this?  Wouldn't be the first time.

Rev., on pp. 18 of the Supergrit catalogue a range of grits from 180 to 4,000 is shown. They work well on raw wood as well as on finishes.  Cool

Thanks Bud.  I've use some before in the 150-400 range.  I just didn't know that it came finer than that.  Guess I never really looked.  Does Supergrit have a web-site/online catalog?

Not at those prices.  I'll stick with my Rhino paper that I cut myself into 2" squares for about .06 a piece and then the fine grits that I purchase at the hardware store for .65 a sheet and the MicroMesh that I have.  Loads cheaper.

Recon, Rhino Paper is a brand of velcro backed sand paper that is available in large sheets.  If I remember right it is 1 yard by 1 meter.  Don't ask why they mix the units of measure, I have know idea why.  Anyway, I mark out 2 inch wide strips on the back side and then cut it into strips using an old band saw blade.  Then I make a 2" mark on the band saw table and cut the strips into squares.  When the large sheets are cut into these 2" squares they work out to right at $.06/square.  Before I found Industrial Abrasives I was paying $.25 each for 2" wave edge discs from Woodcraft.  You tell me which one makes more sense  Wink.

This is the stuff I use also.

I cut the sheets into 2" strips and roll it up. When I need a square, I just cut one off at a time. Just my way of doing things.

When you buy from this company be sure to look around, somewhere the site they have a freebie coupon for one of those big erasers that are used to clean sandpaper.

If you look at overall time that you are using to make all of your squares I would be guessing an hour or so, the labor brings the cost way up.  plus I have alot less time so the value of that time is even more.

So I purchase 50 two inch discs for 8 bucks or so.
