Sharpening Demystified....the video....
Mar 20th, 2008 at 1:36pm

I read an article in the AAW magazine by Kirk DeHeer  called "Sharpening Demystified,"  it was in Volume 21 Issue 4, on pages 32–34.

I have found this system works VERY well, I made a little video about how it works.

You can email Kirk DeHeer at Craft Supplies and he will send you a PDF file of the article.  Kdeheer@cs.com

I set up my grinding system using Kirk's design about a year ago and Stu is correct, it works great.

I finally had a chance to look at your video Stu. Very good presentation.

As I was watching you sharpen your 3/8" gouge, I couldn't help but but notice how much steel you where grinding away. One or two passes is all that is needed, unless  of course there was a problem with the edge to begin with.

The difference between sharp and dull is about .002"

Just wondering, it looked like you dripped the 3/8" into some water, am I mistaken?

Hi Ron

I put a note up on my video (today) explaining that I normally only sharpen for a few seconds, but for the video, I did it longer, while I was explaining.

Yes I dip the end of the gouge into some water, the gouge is NOT red hot, so it will NOT damage the edge, in my experience.  Smiley

Thanks for the kind words.

Hey Stu, thanks for responding.

I had a feeling you where sharpening that long for presentation purposes. It's a good idea that you added the note. People who are starting out learning how to sharpen may not have realized this.

As you know, dunking "Red Hot" HSS will do more damage to the whole tool than just it's edge. My tools rarely get that hot that I can't touch them after sharpening, but when they do, I just place them on the bed of the lathe to dissipate the heat.

Enjoy and Safe Turning.
