Fireproof finishes?
Apr 10th, 2008 at 2:49pm

Hey everybody....first post here.

My girlfriend wants me to make an ashtray out of wood for her dad. So obviously it would need to have a fireproof finish applied. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Ken

Have you thought of finding a suitable clear glass dish and making a turned wooden base into which it will fit in the manner you wish, based upon your design?  Do you think it might be possible to turn a base, place a glass dish inside a hollowed out portion, and turn a rim that can either be glued into place or threaded (making it removable for cleaning) to fit the base?  I'd just want to make sure the recipient of the item understands that, because it is made primarily from wood, it will burn if used improperly.  I don't believe there is any realistic method for fireproofing wood that would compliment a turned wood piece.

I can't think of any finish that would make the wood look finished and still be fireproof. In fact, all the ones I can think of wood make it more flammable.  But pipes are often made from briar burl and they only burn slowly over time. I'm not sure exactly what kind of wood a briar burl is but I bet if you googled it you could find out and then make the ashtray from that.

Wheels I found this.

Meerschaum
Meer"schaum\, n. [G., lit., sea foam; meer sea + schaum foam; but it perh. is a corruption of the Tartaric name myrsen. Cf. Mere a lake, and Scum.]

1. (Min.) A fine white clay like mineral, soft, and light enough when in dry masses to float in water. It is a hydrous silicate of magnesia, and is obtained chiefly in Asia Minor. It is manufactured into tobacco pipes, cigar holders, etc. Also called sepiolite.

2. A tobacco pipe made of this mineral.
