forum software question
Aug 4th, 2008 at 11:59am

Gents,
more out of curiosity than anything else, is there a reason that YaBB tries to access my clipboard every time I post? Since the answer is (so far at least) 'No' as a matter of course, I was wondering what causes that. I checked in the profile controls and don't see a switch box for that. TIA

No problem Ned.  The software for this site automatically wants to add your post to a clipboard.  The reason is that sometimes there are issues or glitches that cause a lengthy post to get lost and not post.  I believe that if you will click the "yes" button that you will quit getting that message.  I will just kind of automatically copy your posts to the clipboard and if you loose your post you can open a reply box, hit ctrl + v and you'll have your post again, ready to post.  Hope that clears up that issue for you.

HeyDoug
I understand what you are saying but I have two computers here and on one computer it does it but on the other it does not.  I find it to be a very huge irritant and would like to be able to stop it.  If you know how I would sure appreciate it.

OH and clicking on allow does not stop the message from happening, it happens everytime I post regardless of what I click.

I'm on two different computers through the day, and this is the first time I heard about this.

Just guessing here....

What browser are you using?

Internet Explorer on both but two different versions.  The one with the newer version of IE is the one that does the accessing to the notepad.

I'm limited (work computer) to IE 7 with moderate security levels. And saying 'yes' earlier didn't change the situation at all. Now that I know what it is, I'm less 'concerned 'with it. Still 'annoying', of course.

I use Firefox on both of my computers.  When we started up the new software, I got the message the first couple of posts on both computers.  I don't get it on either one now.  Curious that some still get it and others don't.  Maybe it isn't working on all of our computers.  Derek, could you check this out for us?  Could there be a glitch in the coding?  I know, it's never happened before  Roll Eyes, but maybe just this once there's actually a glitch.

I have found that one system will "remember" some things and not others.  In my administrative stuff, Firefox will remember my password in one particular spot where IE never does.  That's one reason why I'm a Firefox guy now.

I believe that it is an IE7 issue.  IE7 is a little more picky about security items, and notifying you of them.  The other browsers either just block it, or do it without the warning.

I've wondered about that.  At the same time, I've not need that feature since moving over to the new server.  The old one was bad for loosing your post before it posted.

IE 6 asked once, IE 7 asks every time.  I like how 7 works and all but some things are just not registering.  Lately it keeps droping the cookies at certain forums I log into, like WR.  I usually don't notice till I go to post something and I get the "you need to be loged in" notice, keep in mind that was the first thing I did when I opened WR.  It's starting to get annoying, I might just take it out to the shop and have it out with it.  See what a few minutes on the lathe does to 7's attitude problem. I can't think of a single reason why you should do this on your personal computer.

I agree with Ron.  Firefox has worked nearly flawlessly for me ever since installing it.  I imagine that those few hiccups that I've experienced were operator error.

After looking at Ron's link I looked to see what version I'm using.  Looks like it's time to upgrade.  Ron, you have a link for that?

Theres a link in that there post!

Once you install FireFox, it asks you if you want to import all your links and passwords from IE.

The transition is flawless.

I was looking for an "Update" button.  Went ahead with the download and it did exactly what I was looking for.  Just another example of why Firefox is growing in usage so quickly.  And their claim that they run faster than IE?  You can bank the farm on it.

I misunderstood

On the top bar
Help > Check For Updates
or
Tools > Options > Advanced >Update Tab

As for speed, you bet, it will out run IE.

I also love the way you can customize FireFox
Tools > Addons   - When the window opens click on the link on the bottom right hand side the reads "Get Extensions"

Some of my Favorite and consider them essential
Tab Mix Plus (Not ready for ver. 3 yet)
BBCodeXtra
FireFTP
ImageZoom
TinyURL Creator

A few others that are nice
FlashBlock
DomainFinder
Tweak Network

I have a bunch more but these should get you started.
