Well, I posted the first picture to be nominated for the 2009 WR Calendar.  It's the PhillipE Symposium Bowl.

OKay I used to be able to do it but now I can not figure out how to move a pic from my gallery to another gallery.  I was going to move the pic of my hat to the 2009 calendar gallery but I can't seem to find the link to do so.

Phil, since you didn't turn until the gathering at your place, I'm just glad you have 3 turnings.  Good to have you back, buddy.  I figure you're working tonight, but LAW is tonight at Walden School if you'd like to join us.  It's just east of Hubbards Lane on Westport Rd.

I Noticed that the NUmber of nominations for the 2009 calendar has grown quite a bit since I posted but we need more.  Just incase you're wondering, you don't have to nominate your own stuff, if you see something someone else has done and you think deserves to be in it, contact that  person and ask them if you can nominate their piece.

Okay guys fun is fun but seriously we need some more pics for the calendar and we need at least 12 different peoples turnings because no one is allowed to have more than one in the calendar.  Leo, I know you have lots of beautiful stuff you can input and I know there are lots of other who can too.

I Knew I could goad you into it... Wink

Doug if your serious, double click on your pic and below  your description is a series of small Icons.  The bottom row third from right when you place curser over it, it will say move/delete or something to that effect, I think you can get it from there.

I'd like to add the Majestic pen I posted, but I don't know how to move it. It seems the only place I can post a photo is in the over all gallery, every time I try to up load a new photo in my gallery, I get an error... sorry but I don't know what else to do but ask if one of you Mods will do it for me.

It'll have to be one of the Admin types, us Mods don't have any powers in the Gallery.

The software is kind of cryptic and I spent very little time with the gallery software.
Even though you showed me the image I had to flip though pages in the admin section to find it.

I did move it, but that is the only place it is. I'm not sure if that is okay by you, let me know if it isn't.

Did you try what I was telling Doug earlier?  It took me a while to find it.  IF you double click on your pic in the main gallery just below the description is an area called "additional information and in that box is several small icons ( around 9 of them I think)  there is one= that if you place the curser over it it will say "move/delete"  click on that icon and and you should be able to figure out from there what to do.

Thanks Ron, now do I need to send the photo to you or can you use the one in the gallery?

Philip, I looked where you said to look and I didn't see an icon with move/delete, I did see some but not that, the only one I think might move it is "edit" and their was only 7 icons and since Ron has already moved it I didn't want to try and take a chance and mess something up. I'll try with another photo, but not this one.

"Send in the raw files."

Ron,

by raw file, do you mean the format RAW or will JPEG be ok?  my camera can do both formats.

Jpeg will be fine, just don't do any type of image manipulation.

I should be able to handle all RAW files, but there are so many flavors of RAW files it would be my luck I get one I can't open.

Chuck, in order to print the calendars, a high res image is needed.

Oh well let me know if mine is good enough if not please delete it from the gallery list for the calendar. I'll have to wait until I do something nice for the next one & get advice on the best way to take the pic for consideration of the next time we do the calendar. Embarrassed

Chuck, the file is too small and the background is a bit distracting

Ron Sardo wrote on Sep 4th, 2008 at 2:52pm:
Hey Folks,
Yes, it's that time of the year again.

This gives you about a month to get a good, high resolution photo of your best work of 2008.

Anything turned this year (2008) is eligible. Deadline to get your photo(s) in is Midnight Sunday, October 5, 2008 (Pacific Time).

Each member can enter a maximum of 3 photos.

Make a copy of your file and reduce the copy to a maximum of 100k. Place your image(s) in the Gallery using the 2009 WR Calendar Album.

Photos that are too small, out of focus, have distracting backgrounds or do not fit into a woodturning calendar will be deleted. If time permits, I'll email you to give you a chance to produce a better image.

As the images come in, and when they are approved for voting, I will ask you to email me the full sized version of your photo. Please rename the files to match the name you used in the gallery. example "maple_burl_box.jpg".  Make it easy on me.

Voting will start the following weekend and close Midnight Saturday, October 18, 2008 (Pacific Time). A link will be provided later for voting.  Remember, to have your photos part of the voting process, I will need the full size version beforehand.

The calendars should be ready mid November for Christmas shopping.

----

A couple of tips on photographing turnings:

Make sure your image is in focus.

Set your camera on it's highest resolution setting, which means you'll get the biggest file your camera can provide. Remember these images will be full sized pictures, enlarging them will not make them look their best.

Send in the raw files. Do not crop, edit or manipulate the image in anyway.

Use a light tent to diffuse light and soften shadows.

Use a neutral backgrounds like gray, white or black. White works best in this project as the pieces look more natural and framed better if the lighting is right. Grey would be the second choice.

Avoid the "turning on the kitchen table" pose
, the multiple textures and background colors can obscure the subject & cause color reflections that aren't true to life.

If possible, try to photograph the profile & upper portion in the same shot. Using an angle that just barely shows the rim opening helps the viewer see the full form as well as the thickness/finish quality of the inside.

Try to frame the photo so that the subject has a couple of inches of space on all sides. The reason for hi-res photos is so we can rotate and crop as needed but if the subject is right against an edge we won't have any room to work.

Good Luck.

PLEASE

Use the same name as you used in the gallery as the file name. If everybody calls it Calendar.jpg it will be a mess on my end.

send ONLY full resolution files.

LOW RESOLUTION files WILL NOT BE USED.
