Inserting a thumbnail that links to the gallery
Nov 8th, 2008 at 1:42pm

Ok, so here's how it was done.

First of all Please note the following about this tutorial:

I have used these brackets "{}" to replace these brackets"[]"

From here on out, if you see something like "{hello}" it really means "[hello]" It's a subtle distinction but a very important one.

1.  Go to the gallery and you'll see the first page is full of thumbnails.  Right click on the thumbnail that you want to display in your post.
2. Choose "properties."
3. In the properties box, you will see a heading for "Address: (URL)"  The gibberish to the right of that heading (begins with "http://") is the web address to the thumbnail image.  If you put your mouse anywhere within that gibberish and triple left click (three quick clicks with the left mouse button) you will see that the entire address is now highlighted.
4.  Now use the keyboard shortcut for copy (Ctrl+C) to copy that gibberish to the clipboard.
5.  Open a second browser window, and navigate your way to the WR thread that you want to Author.
6.  When you get to the part of your message where you want the thumbnail, click this button,Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register , located above the box you are typing in.
7.  When you click on that button, you will see"{img}}{/img}" wherever your cursor was located at the time you pushed the button.
8.  These are called "tags"  There is an opening tag ("{img}") and a closing tag ("{/img}")  This tells the website that you will be adding a picture to your post.  The location of that picture (The gibberish that you copied to the clipboard) is placed between these two tags like this:
"{img}Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register"

Anything that is placed between these two tags is not displayed in the post as text, but instead, the post uses this information to located the thumbnail you want to display and then it replaces the whole schebang with just the thumbnail picture like this
Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register

Well that's all fine and dandy, but you'll notice that the picture itself doesn't provide a link to the full size image.  You know it doesn't because when you put your mouse over the picture your pointer doesn't change to the little hand.  Don't believe me?  Go ahead and try it.    Wink

9. So now we need to go back to the gallery page where all the thumbnails are located.  Left click on the thumbnail you want and this will take you to the page with the larger image.

10.  Towards the top of the window, right below the Forward, Back, Stop, and Refresh buttons, is the Address Bar.  Highlight all that gibberish (starts with "http://") and copy it to the clipboard with (Ctrl+C).
11.  Now go back to the window with your post and find the part where you see the {img}Gibberish{/img} Highlight everything from the Opening image tag "{img}" to the closing image tag "{/img}" In our case we are looking for "{img}Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register"
12.  When that is all highlighted, Press this button, Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register, located on the left, above the row of smilies.
You will notice that the gunk that you had highlighted is now surrounded by URL tags ({url}{/url}).
These tags will be used to tell the post that you want that picture to link somewhere.  Now we just have to tell it where to go when someone clicks on the thumbnail.
13.  Change the opening URL tag from this "{url}" to this "{url=}"
14.  Immediately after the "=" you want to paste the gibberish that you copied from the address bar on that page with the larger image of the picture.  It should now look like this "{url=http://www.woodturnersresource.com/wrphotopost/showphoto.php?photo=6715}{img}Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register"
15.  The code in step 14 will produce the following when you swap all the "{}" for "[]":
Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register
16. Check by moving your mouse pointer will confirm that it is indeed a link when your pointer changes to the little hand.
17.  Double check by clicking on the linked thumbnail that it does take you to the same place as this Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register

18.  Now you guys try for youself.
