I have a question about Mylands. Most of you seem to like it, so after all this talk, I picked some up yesterday and put it on a stopper. I am pretty pleased so far with the results, but how well does it hold up. I have tried Hut CC in the past and I hated it.  How many coats do you reccommend for duribility?
As always, thanks

At least 2 but better with 3 coats.  Add a layer of Renaissance for extra protection.

You wouldn't want him to give you an answer without thinking first.   Grin Grin  I use the Mylands on pens and usually put on 4 or 5 coats just because of the constant handling.  Also I put on a final coat of wax.

I also use the Friction Polish, but I usually use several layers of their sanding sealer first.  It seems to give a smoother finish.

I am curious how you use the friction polish.

I put it on with a paper towel (area on the towel saturated) coat the wood and then pour more on the towel for several coats.

Then I use my hand/fingers and create friction until it so hot I can not keep my fingers on the bowl.  Like magic the shine pops.

Kind of fun also ---  I am careful have not had an accident yet --  on the outside I put one palm on top and on palm on the bottom and use fast(high) RPMs.

I find I get the best finish using Cotton knit fabric(t-shirt material).  I work with 8" squares and watch it doesn't wrapped around any fingers.  I use a wet corner to apply, and multiple layers in the center to polish with moe heat than my fingers could stand.

I also use squares of Cotton flannel for polishing stick Carnuba wax.

Why Cotton?  Some of the synthetics will melt at the temperatures we generate just from the friction,  and that could just ruin a nicely finished piece.  DAMHIKT!  The synthetic melts on the hot spot, when you move to a cooler spot on the piece, it can glue itself to the piece and get ripped out of your hand.

I ditto Jim's method.  I have had best results with cotton tshirt material.  Not the thin stuff.

"Use a 4 oz. container so if it is knocked over, you don't loose the whole bottle."  That is brilliant stuff!!! This is why I joined this forum.  I have knocked over my bottles more times than I can count.  My concrete floor is really shiny!!! I just mounted a cheap cup holder on the left side of my lathe to hold my bottle so it don't vibrate off when I am finishing a project.  Never even thought about using a smaller bottle.  .........Brilliant!
