Voluntary Action Requested

You may or may not have noticed that my name has changed just a bit.  What you now see is my real name.  No more hiding behind a shortened portion of my name or even a screen name.  Just my name.  That is after all who I am.

Spam is on the rise.  We have taken measures to reduce the spam registrations on this site that have helped dramatically.  However, I can imagine that these measures will not last forever.  Many of the other sites have made the move to real names only.  I fear we will need to make this move as well in the future.  For now I am only asking that you change your screen name to real names on a voluntary basis.

Won't you join those of us who have already made the move to complete honesty?  Won't you use your real name instead of hiding behind a screen name?  If you have questions, send me a PM with any questions you may have.  I'll be glad to discuss it with you.  And remember, this is purely a voluntary action at this point.  No need to feel forced.

Done.  All you need to do is go into your profile and change the name on the first page.  You won't lose any posts, ranking, or anything else.  You might want to sign your posts with your old screen name until people recognize your real name.   Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Cool Cool

I really like this.  I prefer to start my posts with the persons name rather than a screen name.  It also helps keep people more civil.  I use dbonertz because my name is Dale Bonertz.  Thanks for requesting this.

For those of you who want to change your name in the gallery, PM Rev or I.  We need to make the change on an Admin level.  Please include old gallery name and we will match your Forum name.

FYI

In the last 90 minutes 29 spammers tried to register on WR. Over the Holidays we where averaging 20-30 spammers tiring to register in a 160 minute time span.  These where stopped automatically by the systems I have in place. Another 10 or so spammers a day get passed the registration but never get activated. Doug set up a system that works against these.

Some of you may have noticed the 4 spam messages that got though recently. That's where the kill delete button comes in handy.

The problem is these people are getting more and more sophisticated trying to stay ahead of them is a non-stop process.

Thanks for your patience.

Doug, Jim,
Can somebody please change my name in the gallery also. One thing I think I have 2 registrations in the gallery one for recon & the other for recon recon. At least when I try to post a pic it gives me the option to put it under one of them. if I do have 2 can you delete one of them.

Thanks

Dave brings up a point.  Changing the screen name does NOT change the login.  You will still need to use your old screen name to login.

Interesting.  I just logged out just to try to figure this out.  I have to log in using my original name.  Hmmm, I'll have to study on this a while.  Then again, why do ya'll log out?  It is rare that I ever log in because I've never logged out.  Am I missing something?

Let's see if that worked...

...yep, it did.

I use the "Vaughn McMillan" screen name all over the place, but my real name is Ichabod Horace Cornelius Jr. III. All the cute girls just call me "Ick". Cheesy

You guys should appreciate the work the Admins do here to keep the spam in check. smiley=dankk2.gif  We're getting a similar barrage of attempted spam account registrations at Family Woodworking, so I know what goes into keeping the airwaves clean.

I understand the spam attack because I was involved in a medical support website for ankylosing spondylitis and we lost it to Russian hackers.  We were amazed that our little, non-mainstream website could attract such attention but, once it was picked up by the spammers' computers we were targeted relentlessly.

The solution was to buy in protection software but we just didn't have the money and eventually, despite our best efforts, the hackers got into the admin databases and made the operation of the site impossible.  Our web provider was worse than useless when we asked for help so we shut up shop.

Deleting spam registrations is like pushing a rock uphill.

Even though the login for the forum remained the original user name, anyone who had their user name changed in the Gallery will have to use the new user name when they login in the future.

Something else I just found out - To send someone a PM without going to their profile and clicking the PM link, you need to type in their user name, not their screen name.

I just found this. Hope the change worked.
I know about as much about computer stuff as I do women - just enough to get myself in trouble far too often!
I have a yahoo account. Only other one is work and I can't check this site from there. If that means I'm out could someone let me know.

I really like this.  I prefer to start my posts with the persons name rather than a screen name.  It also helps keep people more civil.  I use dbonertz because my name is Dale Bonertz.  Thanks for requesting this.

Dale

I feel the same way, I hang out on another forum most of the time, and many members don't put their real names even in their profile. Saying Hey You just seems plain rude, but some of the folks get real touchy about using their real name.

Ken,
We don't have the problem with flaming or other crap like that we got a good bunch of guys & girls. If the person doing the flaming wouldn't listen to the admin to cool it there is always the admin delete member button.

Different Ron  smiley=lolk.gif His last name is Adams,

Don't feel bad, I'm so use to everyone's screen names, I still get confused.
Maybe if we add our old screen name to our signature it would less confusing
