I started to develop a website in Feb. of this year for a Custom Cabinet shop.  I had never done anything like that so I finally bought a software package that was about $80.  It is called Serif WebplusX2.  There were several nice features that pulled me in that direction.  First, I could download a trial version for 30 days at no charge.  Second, when I purchased it Serif was offering one year free web hosting with a company called Jumpline.  Third, I could set up the domain name using the webhosting for a $10 charge.

The final great piece was that there is a great user forum for the Serif software which has reviewed my site and offered many suggestions.

I had done very little design before this experience and I had the site up and running with the first version in about 3 weeks.

My plan is to see how the one year free hosting goes and then either stay with the current host or change to another company.

Hope this helps

Jim

Hey there Jim, welcome to the forum.  Nice clean web site you have there and your suggestion for a web host is greatly appreciated.  I too would like to set up a commercial site.  I'm a little hesitant after having reviewed some of the civil liability factors associated with doing business on the Internet (the cost of insurance is pretty high) but I haven't given up the idea entirely.

Looks like the base GoDaddy site is going to be about $32.00.  I might be missing something, but if I already have a PayPal account, I would think that I could use their shopping cart and checkout and not have the shopping cart from GoDaddy.  With theirs it looks like you have to get their SSL certificate (another $30) as well in order to take credit cards.  And that doesn't include the Standard US Merchant account ($60) to accept credit cards.  All that is included with PayPal.  Or am I missing something?

I used 1 & 1 for a few years, and they were decent most of the time, with good prices. (They usually have some of the lowest prices around.) Their tech support was so-so (and offshore), but they usually got problems resolved. I finally dropped them after several months of having my sites go down almost daily. (And staying down until I called them and told them to fix it. I eventually had the tech support script sheet memorized from calling them so much.)

I'm using Bluehost now, and they have good prices, good uptime, and good tech support.

Coulter, nowadays I'd recommend using the same company for your registration as you do for hosting. Many of the hosting companies will do the registration free if you host your site with them. It doesn't make sense (to me) to pay for the registration if someone is willing to do it for free.
