Bud,  We'll all find out Sunday morning.  It looks like we are going to end up with one 3 way round-robin trade, and 6 swaps.

JimmyC,  The C&T gallery area will open for pictures Sunday morning.

2 1/2 days left, any last minute additions?

The sweating has started, lost a couple of days this week but clear now so going out in the morning to make ANOTHER box, one that I am hopefully fairly happy with.  I will definitely be in on Sunday but I want something better than I have now.

It has been used 8 times to send C&T pieces to other members.  Who will be the 9th recipient?

Today is the last day, are there any changes to the list?  Is everyone about done and ready to post their pictures tomorrow?  There will be a section opened in the gallery specifically for the challange pictures.  I will post the trade partners over night.

I've got a box!  I've got a box!

I started this morning and finished it about 10 minutes ago (9.47pm).  Thanks to E. Bud for the speed advice because it made a huge difference to my cutting.

One problem that is solved now.  When I tried to fit the lid after I took the box off the lathe it was too tight and kept popping off so I wound electrical tape on the bottom of the box, remounted it and cut a new tenon which was critical stuff because of the shape.  Took the box off, lid wouldn't fit!  Then I realised I'd waxed the tenon so I carefully sanded the wax off and the lit fitted - I wish I had realised first time round but this has been a learning experience and I've sure learned a lot.

Brendan, if you are turning a tenon on the cover to fit into the box body then the easiest way to do this is w/a either a square end scraper or a 4mm parting tool. I also form that tenon before I part off the cover. It easier for me to fit the box to the cover. In other words, the cover is completely finished before I begin to turn the box body.

This may seem odd to some turners but then my ancestors were Irish, lad.  Cool

E. Bud, I was making my boxes your way and then, today, changed and made the recess in the lid first and made a tenon on the box to fit the lid.  Then I finished the lid on the box and then the outside of the box before hollowing.  I made the tenon with a 4mm parting tool.  I found that it was easier to cut the tenon to fit the lid than cut a recess to fit a tenon.  I can post my little army of failures if proof is needed Grin.

But, the main difference was speed.  I was using logs I pulled from a 30 year old pile in an old store house because I had run out of dry wood.  When I was cutting the first ones I got bad tear out but using your advice I got good cuts with a spindle gouge.

Here are the pairings.  First post your pictures in the gallery under "Spring 2009 Challenge and Trade."  Then the first 6 pairs will PM each other with home addresses so you can exchange  boxes.  Because we have an odd number of participants, the last group will be a round robin, Tony sends to Mark, Mark sends to me, and I'll send to Tony.  Any questions???

12-Chris Strunk (cstrunk) <-> 5-Ken Ward
10-Leo Frilot <-> 6-Bob Hamilton
15-E. Bud Gillaspie <-> 7-Bill Blasic
2-Rev. Doug Miller <-> 3-Mike Baber
11-Jeff McDonald <-> 8-Brendan McAreavy
14-Jimmy C <-> 9-Ron Sardo
13-Tony (wheels4) -> 4-Mark_Damron -> 1-Jim Quarles -> to 13-Tony

Ken, take good care of the box when you get it, it needs to be used for the next C&T.

I'm waiting to see some great pictures tomorrow.  I have to take mine tomorrow to post.

Sorry to be late to the party.  I came down with strep throat Friday and have really not gotten over it yet.  My box is done other than another coat or two of finish.  I think it came out great.  I'll get a pic up as soon as I can.  Sorry to be a tad behind, but could not be helped this time.
