Spring Challange & Trade
Apr 21st, 2009 at 11:35am

Here it is, the Spring 2009 Challange & Trade.

Your goal is:

     An end grain box, 2.5" - 5" in diameter,
with a grain matched lid that fits just snugly enough to pick up the box by lifting the lid
.  Embellishments such as an inlay get you extra brownie points.
     The real challange is matching the grain of the lid.  This means you need to make it out of one piece of wood with a skinny parting cut to remove the piece for the lid.

The deadline is midnight, Saturday, May 9.  That gives you almost 3 weeks.  So sign up and start turning.

For those of you who are new to our C&T's, WR challanges you to make a piece that fits a (usually) broad set of specifications we provide.  After the deadline, when everyone is supposed to be done, we pair up the participants with Randomizer and each pair trades their finished pieces.  Do not sign up if you don't want to trade.  If you have problems getting it done, let me know before the deadline so I do not assign you a partner.

Hmm, I've got this Ash log.....  OK, I'm in.

Between 2.5" and 5" in diameter.  I said nothing about the height, but it has to look proportioned right.

Ken... Ain't gonna happen... mama says we're driving my lathe, it gets better gas mileage, but I may be able to change her mind once I tell her about going up the hill to your place.

Come on folks... this is gonna be a good one and its just 1 piece of wood!!! Brendan, you in or not, it shouldn't cost to much to ship a small box to the US ya know. Looks like we got eight so far, one maybe and if they can change the date maybe one more... whatta ya say Jim... can we... Please... for Jimmy C.

I have never been nervous writing a post but I am now!  I had no intention of taking part because it would be unfair to whoever traded with me but when I told my wife that she said that if I didn't enter she would make my life more miserable than she already has.  I don't know how that's possible but she seems pretty confident so...I'm in.

I would hope that if anyone were having some temporary financial difficulties that would make the cost of postage a hardship they would not feel embarrassed to request by PM to the moderator that they NOT be paired internationally.  I kind of like the idea of having my work spread around the world.  Cheesy

Take care

LOL Ken, My wife wouldn't agree to being traded because she thinks I'm brilliant (checks over shoulder...OK, coast clear).

My concern is that I'm going to disappoint someone because I've only ever made one box so this is a big challenge for me.

Another week would give JimmyC a chance and, for selfish reasons, would give me a chance too because I am having awful diffs here (another box done, lid split).

70% complete, but the grain doesn't line up.  Well, actually the grain does line up but the spalting figure doesn't.  Guess that's almost impossible especially if the spalting is at a 45 degree angle to the grain.  If time permits, I'll make another.  Otherwise............

Leo lining up spalting is near impossible this is how I handled it by adding a insert.

Thank you, thank you.

I am working desperately hard to get a completed piece and was really worried that I wouldn't make it.  Just to let you see the difference this challenge has made here.  Normally I spend an hour or two a week at the lathe but this week I have done 43 hours because I am determined to crack this.  I'm absolutely loving this but it is an emotional roller coaster.

BMac, I've found it's much better to use dry wood when making lidded box's, the wood doesn't shift or split most time's, but with wet or damp wood its gonna move along with other thing until it dry's.

Mike is right about dry wood.

I rough out dry wood and let it sit a couple of days before I fit the lid. I do this because the wood will move.

Yeah Mike, I've taken a while to learn that but I've discovered that wet wood doesn't really care how much you want it to dry evenly or how carefully you cut it.  I have another piece of Laurel which is cutting well but my next attempt is to cut (gulp) the piece of heavily spalted Beech I have been saving for something really special - I reckon it's time has come.

Thanks for that advice Ron, just saw it when I posted this and it is just in time.

So, if the "deadline" is May 16 then I'll give this one a go. "Things" have leveled out a bit so that I can squeeze in some shop time. It won't be anything fantastic, just a nice, little, box.

You'll also have to take into consideration that I've not put tool to wood for three+ months.  Cry

Well guys I might have been one of the last to enter this C&T and guess what... just finished my piece. While I am sure most of yours will turn out better (pun intended  smiley=slap.gif), but I am pretty pleased with my very first lidded box.  Smiley

Even tried out by beal 3-On buffing wheel set up.

Anyway just wanted to wish you guys the best on finishing your projects. Can't wait to see who I get paired up with.

Do I need to post a list of people who have already received the "box", or has someone else already taken care of that?

Happy shavings

I am getting back to the lathe tomorrow.  The week extension had been a great relief because I've had a bit of a rough ride health wise which is something I can't predict but all OK now so will get at it again.  Good thing is that I do have a box but I want to do a better one so I had a hunt through my mates 30 year old indoor log pile and found some very dry wood that might do the trick.

I'll post the pairings next Sunday.  Is there anyone who wants to add their name to the list?  Or is there anyone who is having real problems and needs to drop off?  Let me know by Saturday so I have an accurate list to work from.

There is still a chance to get in on this, you have until Saturday!

Man am I out of pratice... This was a good test though. My first the wood was green and move around some ahhrrggg. The second I had a boo boo and the grain doesn't match as I wanted it to, the third so better but I would have liked the lid to fit tighter..  Who ever gets me will have their choice of one of the three....   Walnut, Pecan, Ash...

Good Challenge !!!!   (whens the next one ??)   Wink Grin

LOL... I finally got a completed box and lid off the lathe Saturday night. Its finished, but not the piece I started out with, remember my bruised left eye... that was attempt  number 3. I finally finished attempt number 6, went through 2 pecan, 2 locus and 2 mystery wood, the mystery wood won out!

I was looking at the "Project Plans & Techniques" under boxes.  There use to be a really good writeup on how to make a box.  I went there looking for it and the link is gone.  I remember I used this when I made my first box...  Chris may have done the artical..  It was noting fancy but it was a GREAT step-by-step how to...  Taught me how to do boxes!!

Could it of been the one by Michael Stafford who use to be a member here. He makes alot of lidded box's and beautiful ones at that. He got me interested in making lidded box's.

I also found that the link to "Turning Boxes & Finials" by Pam Reilly doesn't work any more either... sorry, but you can find some on the web if you google... Lidded Boxes by Pam Reilly.

Sheeesh! You lads are makin' lota work out of this. Shocked End grain can not be turned slowly. End grain turned slowly will chatter, tear and generally create problems. Once the blank is round & you've parted off the cover portion, crank up the speed to 1,800+ RPM & hollow away.

Bud,  We'll all find out Sunday morning.  It looks like we are going to end up with one 3 way round-robin trade, and 6 swaps.

JimmyC,  The C&T gallery area will open for pictures Sunday morning.

2 1/2 days left, any last minute additions?

The sweating has started, lost a couple of days this week but clear now so going out in the morning to make ANOTHER box, one that I am hopefully fairly happy with.  I will definitely be in on Sunday but I want something better than I have now.

Today is the last day, are there any changes to the list?  Is everyone about done and ready to post their pictures tomorrow?  There will be a section opened in the gallery specifically for the challange pictures.  I will post the trade partners over night.

I've got a box!  I've got a box!

I started this morning and finished it about 10 minutes ago (9.47pm).  Thanks to E. Bud for the speed advice because it made a huge difference to my cutting.

One problem that is solved now.  When I tried to fit the lid after I took the box off the lathe it was too tight and kept popping off so I wound electrical tape on the bottom of the box, remounted it and cut a new tenon which was critical stuff because of the shape.  Took the box off, lid wouldn't fit!  Then I realised I'd waxed the tenon so I carefully sanded the wax off and the lit fitted - I wish I had realised first time round but this has been a learning experience and I've sure learned a lot.

Brendan, if you are turning a tenon on the cover to fit into the box body then the easiest way to do this is w/a either a square end scraper or a 4mm parting tool. I also form that tenon before I part off the cover. It easier for me to fit the box to the cover. In other words, the cover is completely finished before I begin to turn the box body.

This may seem odd to some turners but then my ancestors were Irish, lad.  Cool

E. Bud, I was making my boxes your way and then, today, changed and made the recess in the lid first and made a tenon on the box to fit the lid.  Then I finished the lid on the box and then the outside of the box before hollowing.  I made the tenon with a 4mm parting tool.  I found that it was easier to cut the tenon to fit the lid than cut a recess to fit a tenon.  I can post my little army of failures if proof is needed Grin.

But, the main difference was speed.  I was using logs I pulled from a 30 year old pile in an old store house because I had run out of dry wood.  When I was cutting the first ones I got bad tear out but using your advice I got good cuts with a spindle gouge.

Here are the pairings.  First post your pictures in the gallery under "Spring 2009 Challenge and Trade."  Then the first 6 pairs will PM each other with home addresses so you can exchange  boxes.  Because we have an odd number of participants, the last group will be a round robin, Tony sends to Mark, Mark sends to me, and I'll send to Tony.  Any questions???

12-Chris Strunk (cstrunk) <-> 5-Ken Ward
10-Leo Frilot <-> 6-Bob Hamilton
15-E. Bud Gillaspie <-> 7-Bill Blasic
2-Rev. Doug Miller <-> 3-Mike Baber
11-Jeff McDonald <-> 8-Brendan McAreavy
14-Jimmy C <-> 9-Ron Sardo
13-Tony (wheels4) -> 4-Mark_Damron -> 1-Jim Quarles -> to 13-Tony

Ken, take good care of the box when you get it, it needs to be used for the next C&T.

I'm waiting to see some great pictures tomorrow.  I have to take mine tomorrow to post.

Sorry to be late to the party.  I came down with strep throat Friday and have really not gotten over it yet.  My box is done other than another coat or two of finish.  I think it came out great.  I'll get a pic up as soon as I can.  Sorry to be a tad behind, but could not be helped this time.

To all the C&T participants:

Guys, this C&T is awesome. All of you did a great job. I like them all, each one is a work of art. Each one shows a unique aspect of the artistic craftsmanship that is turning. From simple elegence to intricate detailing each one is a supurb example of our hobby, passion, artform. My hat is off to each of you, I only wish I could admire them all in person.

Glyn, you couldn't be more right.  Every time we do one of these I am amazed at how many different pieces are turned.  Sometimes there are a couple that are very similar.  I expected that this would be one of those.  However, we didn't see much duplication.  It is simply amazing the variation of the human imagination.

Mark,  I received your box in the mail today.  As usual, the picture doesn't do it justice.  It is fabulous.  I mailed mine to Wheels4 a couple of days ago.

We are still waiting on 2 people to post pictures.  Does anyone have any problems about getting their box shipped?

Mine's on it's way to USA this morning.  It might take some time because the mail man has to walk to the west coast of Ireland, paddle a currach to America and then walk to CA - the exercise will do him good and it was the cheapest option.

I got two boxes in the mail today.  One was about a cube and weighed nearly nothing.  Mike did a great job on his box.  The fit of the lid was perfect.  You did a great job, Mike.  It will look great along with the other pieces in my rogue's gallery.  The only issue I have with it is that you didn't sign it anywhere.  Dude, when I get that dreaded loss of memory disease, how am I supposed to remember who spun this piece round?  Thanks.  BTW, yours will be in the mail soon.

The second was a much flatter box.  Turns out that my wife sent our dork of a nephew a graduation gift.  He moved and didn't leave a forwarding address.  I think we ought to send him an email saying that he missed out on a $50,000 opportunity, but because he didn't leave a forwarding address the offer has expired.  Might teach him a little responsibility, at least to take care of some of the details when he makes a move.  I've given him a new name.  Owa Tador Kiam

Doug,
Tell your nephew that once the carrier finds out he moves they hold the mail for 10 days then they do paperwork that he went MLNA (moved left no forwarding address) then all of his bills, checks everything goes back to the sender. His credit rating will take a major hit cause he will not be getting his bills they will automatically will send it to a either their lawyer to find where he lives or to a company that goes after their delinquent accounts. This will cause him a lot of headaches.

It depends sometimes I haven't found out for a month or more. If it is a house with a slot that's harder but a box is easy nobody goes through somebody's crappy mail.

Got Ken's piece yesterday. The pictures do not do it justice, the lid has a very nice "click" feel when closing the box. I am going to have to work on this again. Thanks ken for a new piece to add to my Rouge's collection.

You are welcome buddy.  It is interesting.  Not at all what I had in mind, but it came out pretty nice.  I'm going to let the finish cure another day or so and get a good coat of wax on it before I send it off.  Still felt a little sticky last night.  Drying nicely though and should be on its way before the end of the week.  Think I'll mark the box, "Male Enhancement Products."  That ought to keep momma out of the box until you at least get to hold it.   Grin Grin Grin

My apologies to the group and especially to Bud who was very patient.  I had a short illness that made it impossible to turn for a while and then I forgot to photograph it before I sent it (Brainless).  So a special thanks to Bud for photographing the piece and sending me the picture so I could post it, Thanks Bud!
