End grain hollowing with a spindle gouge

This is a better view of the cut I use for hollowing end grain when turning ball & cup toys, goblets, or boxes.  It works well for me up to a couple of inches deep. If I need to go much deeper I use my Termite.  Dunno if it is the "right" way, but it is the way I do it.  Smiley

Question I couldn't tell but it looks like a homemade tool? it looks like a flat bar that you ground to a kind of rounded point?

No, it's a 1/2" spindle gouge that I bought unhandled quite a few years ago.  I am not sure of the manufacturer.

I would call that a 'Continental' spindle gouge.  The gouges made in (continental) Europe have a shallower, flatter cross-section than British made gouges.

I dunno.  It is made from round bar stock with the flute machined into it.  I was under the impression that continental gouges were made from flat bar stock that was forged into a U shape.  The markings on it say "Merlin HSS, Treen Heritage Ltd.".  There are some other angles of it in the ball & cup video where I used it for the clean-up pass on the inside of the cup and removing the bulk of the waste in the handle area.

There's the word I couldn't think of - 'flute'. 

Thanks Bob, I think I know where I went wrong.  The spindle gouges I saw were Hamlet's German pattern that look like they are made from round bar with a wider, more shallow flute than the standard British-made gouges I use.  As you said, Continental gouges are made from flat bar... Oh boy, I don't know if I have enough room in my head for all these variations and derivations.
