Nate,

i noticed in the left side picture some 2" PVC pipe connected to a blue hose.  is that a dust collection system??

Yes, I used 2" PVC and put 1.5" ball valves off tees about every 4' for drops.  Works well, but the filter in the shop vac clogs too quickly so need to get a cyclone type set up.  I've heard there is one that will fit on a 5 gal bucket.  That seems to be about my size.

The best is called the Dust Deputy by Oneida.  The complete package with hardware is $99 at Rockler or Woodcraft.  I have been using 1 for over 3 months.  I started with a dirty filter that with the old trap would have needed replacing in a week or 2.  It is still in use with no drop in power.  I also have stopped sweeping up the bulk of the sawdust before vacuuming.  I used to do that because so much ended up in the filter.

Nate,

do you have any problems with clogging in the PVC?  i am concerned about chunks of bark or long shavings creating a stoppage.

thanks for the info. smiley=dankk2.gif smiley=dankk2.gif

I've not had any problems with it clogging, but haven't tried to (edited out) a tree through there.  I left the end cap unglued so I could add to it or clean out clogs if needed but have not had any issues yet.  I did use T's for the valve connections so there is a tight corner there.  I've sucked up pencils and had them catch there, which is convenient. You could use Y's instead of T's if you were concerned about the tight corners.  Also, with the low velocity of air, high humidity of NC and short distance, I'm not concerned about static build up.  I've been using it for about 2 years now.  The hose is 1.25" ID so it has a little better suction....I think.

Generally PVC can be just pushed together and will hold vacuum well enough that you don't need to glue.  That way you can pull joints apart to remove clogs.  Sometimes a joint just won't cooperate and it needs glue or a layer of electrical tape.
