I put up another single segment technique type video showing a couple more uses for the side grind bowl gouge:

Hi bob,

Another great video.  You know, after watching this and the last one where you used a standard grind bowl gouge. I've decided to buy another 3/8" bowl gouge and keep the standard grind on it because I miss it's versatility.

Hi, Brendan:
When I was reviewing this video on the shearing cut using the wing of the side ground gouge I realized that the edge is at pretty much the same angle to the cut as the shearing cut using the trailing wing with the traditional grind gouge.  The results should be pretty much the same.  The reason to choose one over the other in any given situation would have more to do with accessibility than anything else.  For instance, I would not be able to use the traditional grind gouge for the cut I made in this video because the tailstock would be in the way, while I would not be able to use the side grind gouge in this fashion for a cut on the inside of a bowl like I did in the video on the traditional grind cuts.

There is certainly room in my arsenal for both grinds.  Cheesy

Take care
Bob

Thanks for another great video, Bob.

I remember the first time I got a shearing cut to work right...it was like having a light bulb turn on in my head.  One of those "aha" moments.

Nice demo of the shearing cut Bob. I remember how uneasy I was the first time I tried that cut. I eventually got some guidance from one of the guys in our club. Wish I had seen your video before I tried it. That might have shortened my learning curve.
Well; maybe not bang head
