Charity Auction
Jun 27th, 2009 at 10:00am

I was asked to make something for a charity auction for an Ankylosing Spondylitis support group, an issue very close to me as I have the condition.  I have uploaded the pieces to the gallery but need auction advice please.

The bowl is a single item, no problem there.

The two ring bowls are my problem.  I made them with his & her's finials and now I'm wondering how they should be offered:

a.) As a pair

b.) Individually - the theory being that if someone wants both they have to win both auctions.

Any ideas?

Thanks, Brendan

Tough judgment call.

I would think auctioning off them separately would bring in more money.

Thanks guys.  I was thinking of separate auctions to get more money (I hope) because I have no concern about my matching pair being parted for life.

Steve, Chuck has a very good tutorial under 'Bowls' in TPT.

I would go with separately as well. But make sure that you have the auctioneer present both of them together so people can see them and decide if they want them as a set.

If people don't know they're a set then they might let the first one go.

If they're  really popular item, make sure you have business cards available to hand out to people who didn't win.

Good luck with the auction

Thank you Shannon, I hadn't thought of getting the auctioneer to show them together.

Business cards...I don't have any and I'll not be at the auction because it's in London.  However, I have a good friend there organising the show so she might put people in touch with me if they ask but I don't imagine that's likely to happen.

Agree with the cards thing for the auction... I had more people approach me that didn't win for commissions...

If they're his and hers, I can guarantee you they end up hers and hers...

Well...I got a phone call tonight from the lady who is organising the fund raiser to tell me they have decided not to enter my pieces because they were for a raffle during an evenings entertainment and the folks in charge feel they wouldn't do justice to my stuff and would lose the hand-made/unique element by just handing them out as raffle prizes.  There is an auction element to the night when signed sports stuff like Premier League football shirts etc are going up for grabs but the organisers feel that the people there are going for this type of auction and wouldn't necessarily be interested in woodturnings.

So, the thinking at the minute is to hold my stuff until they have an auction dedicated to fancy goods type stuff where the people know the type of auction they are going to.  There was another suggestion that the charity put the pieces on Ebay to raise funds and the organisers think people will bid like mad to get them but they don't seem to realise that everyone wants everything for nothing on Ebay.

Anyway, it's their problem.
