I picked it up off the Medieval Woodworking list I'm on. It is rather neat.

Making sawdust mostly, sometimes I get something else, but that's more accident then design.

That was a great video.   Thanks Ron.  It was interesting to see how high above center he had the tool rest when hollowing out the bowls.

Absolutely wonderful.  Amazing how the basics are the same (ride the bevel).  Seems that the tool rest was high, wasn't it?  I guess the bottom of the bowl was pretty thick, since he did it all with a screw chuck?

You'd learn fast if you got paid by the piece like that guy probably did.

Cool video.  And to think he only used what 4 chisels and didn't have any fancy chucks!   I hope my wife doesn't see this or there goes my arguement for a chuck!

That's a neat video. I noticed two things...

He used the belt on the headstock as a hand wheel Shocked  which you sure wouldn't want to do to slow the spindle down with like some folks do nowadays. The second was the fact that his right middle finger had a pretty good bruise right at the base of the fingernail. Looks like he got it whacked or pinched somehow. Signs of a working man. Wink

I noticed his face shield was rather small. Grin

I lived in Germany for over 4 years and they have some really good craftsmen that take pride in their work. They manage their forest really well and use lots of nice white pine/fir in their restaurant interiors.

Wow, how is it possible? No face shield, no dust collection, no sharpening system, no laser. How could this poor man turn a bowl.
I think it was in Fine Wood working, a number of years ago I read an interview with one of these old masters who said, " I can do almost anything I need to do with a 3/8th gouge."
I like my toys but  I try to keep that in mind. We tend to get too involved up in the process rather than the results.

Did I see a bowl gouge there Hehe! I saw his finger was messed up too.Sometimes I can just picture my finger pulled between the work and the rest.So Im diligent about keeping the rest  close to the work.Great video.Gary smiley=dankk2.gif

And the equipment was so antiquated!  The headstock had babbit bearings.  You could see the oil cup on top of the headstock casting.
