Hi uys, scooped this up on the way home today. Looks by the wood to be a kind of walnut??? Never saw bark like this before. Went through my couple of books but nada...anyone??? Undecided

Steve,

When you add the first attachment you will see a '+' button beside the attachment line, just click on that and you can add more.

It almost looks like some sorta mesquite but I doubt it.

Can you get a close-up shot of the leaves?  That may help to identify the tree.

The bark and color of wood says walnut, but the leaves... well I can't really tell sense I don't have anything to go by close to my home... sorry I can't be more help, but that what it looks like to me. Nice save you got their, it'll make some really nice turnings!!! smiley=thumbsup.gif

I think mulberry either white or red as it is unusual for black to grow that far north.  Both white and red are more cold tollerant and will grow as far north as Mass.

Normal mulberry is yellow when first cut and will darken in two of 3 days exposed to sunlight.

The leaves look like little leaf linden, the wood looks like butternut. The leaf is not right for butternut though. Cross those two off the list...Bill.. Wink

Guys, I don't believe those leaves go with that tree.  They look like a parasitic plant growing off the side of the tree to me rather than the leaves of the tree itself.  I'm not so sure that it is not either walnut or butternut (with burls to boot).
