a disk sander and table that is set carefully and lightly applied does marvels for reducing variance (variation between pieces as measured by the angles).

I think I am going to like my drum sander more and more as I do segmented shapes.

Sorry if I implied your cuts were off, didn't mean it that way. Theres almost as many methods to complete a segmented turning as thier are turners.

No worries, I am pretty sure my cuts were not accurate.  I think im going to follow Ron's advice closely.  I figured I could assemble 6 of the 12 segments then make those flat.  Since I do not have a disk or belt sander I ran it through my band saw taking only a 16th off.  It made it flat but I did not anticipate making an oval out of my round ring.  lol.  Looking back it seems rather elementary but live and learn I guess.  Im glad I used one of the spare rings I made.  Im going to go back (with another spare ring) and do the same with 3rds instead of 6 piece segments in order to take an even amount out of each quarter.  Funny part was my wife came out and asked what I was doing and when I told her (quite frustrated) that I was making ovals she replied "well of course you are..."  Oh well.

I guess I did sound that way, I didn't mean it that way. Sorry Jim.

@ Rodolfo,
You have a lathe, so make a disk sander!
Faceplate + MDF + PS Sandpaper = sanding disk.
Just rig up a table using your banjo as a base and you are set.

No problem Ron Wink

Rodolfo, click on this link Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register Theres a how to on lathe drum sanders towards the bottom. you can also attach a piece of mdf to a faceplate. Hot glue the ring to the mdf and make the ring flat by turning it on the lathe. Then just pry it off the mdf.

I know its been a while since this thread but while cleaning the incredible mess in the shop tonight I gathered all the scrap pieces from the segmented cutting practice and failed rings and one oval ring I made.  Figured id post it.  Im thinking its going to be fire kindling because I cant imagine what else I can do with it.  Im going to leave it in a bag for a while before I decide for sure though.

The finished rings are part cherry and part ash but I practiced on pine, particle board, some scrap poplar, red oak and whatever scraps I had that were suitable for cutting.

I have a couple of boxes filled like that also Rodolfo.
I'm trying to figure out what to do with them as well.

I suppose disposing of them is not the best idea since there might be something to use them for but I can imagine how it can start to take up space.  Im getting ready to finally turn this first segmented bowl and am already thinking about the next.  Unfortunately I start school in a couple weeks so my shop time is going to drop from an average of about 6 hours (with several small breaks and a lunch break) per day to maybe 3 hours per week tops.  Oh well.  So much to do, so little time.

My scraps and errors go for Kindling too.  Might as well get some use out of them.

I hold on to my scrap pieces hoping to use them on some project in the future.  But after a few years go by I'll dust them off and either throw them in the burn or trash piles.

save the larger of the scrapes, sand them smooth and you will have blocks for the kids and/or grandkids.  mine love them.

malcolm's book is awesome and if your ready for some real challenges, i highly recommend it. by the way, i built a lathe drum sander over the weekend using a three inch piece of galvanized conduit to flatten my rings. if any body wants any more info on it, just let me know.
