Hey wantabes...

Any of you wantabe production turners want a job? I was contacted yesterday by a business owner who wants 25 salad sets=six (why six?) serving bowls, 6" x 2" + one 15" x 4" salad bowl/set. No burl sets. He wants them turned of maple or myrtle. He wants them by, "...the end of Oct."  Roll Eyes

Sounds good, right? Wrong! He wants to pay $50.00/set shipped to his location.  Smiley

If you're interested I have his number (in more ways than one.)

Hey. What's the problem Dave?
I have a Salad Bowl tree that is doing very well this year.
Unfortunately they don't fully ripen until late November.
My pen tree didn't do that well this year.

Unless you have a Maple tree you cut down and started drying last year, you are going to buy close to 10 BDFT of wood for each set and you are talking about $3+ per BDFT for 8/4 & 12/4.  Then shipping.....

I don't think any one is interested in doing these with a gross profit of $15-20 per set less electric, wear and tear on equipment.....

If any one has a student, it would be a good project for them and if they did it ok you could share part of any profit with them.

This project is NOT going to happen.  We all know that.  However, when this kind of request it is a great opportunity for us to educate these folks.  At the price he's wanting to pay, we can't even get the wood, unless we happen to have a tree that came down several years ago and have access to all of it we need.  This fellow probably does not mean any insult.  He just does not understand what it is that he is asking for.  We need to be ready to educate people so that they will understand and not ask for us to do such ridiculous projects.  Could it be done under these parameters?  Sure, if he provided the wood and we wanted to do the work for no profit.  In reality, not a chance.
