150 Birdhouses
Nov 1st, 2009 at 8:51pm

Yesterday a week ago, the Cullman Woodworkers Guild spent the day at Peinhardt Farms.  Each year the owners have a day featuring old time life on the farm.  This includes making sorghum syrup, dying clothes with bark, walnuts etc., sawmilling, old steam engines and a farm museum.

Our club this year had over 150 birdhouses cutout and pre-drill.  We allowed the children to complete the nailing and take it home with them.  It was a great day.  I took several great pictures.

OMG!!!! ROGER!!! YOU ALLOWED CHILDREN TO TOUCH A HAMMER AND DIDN'T HAVE 28 PARAMEDICS AND 5 AIR AMBULANCES ON STANDBY!!!  HOW RECKLESS IS THAT!!!

And, even worse, parents stool idly by and allowed this near-criminal abuse to happen.  There is no hope for America any more!

Sorry, sorry, sorry, a few minutes ago I read about the Local Council here who are refusing parents entry, with their children, to a childrens' playground in case they are child abusers and paedophiles and then saw your wonderful photos and got kinda carried away when I saw children and parents and instructors all having a fantastic time enriching childrens' lives (and their own) without a Watchdog in sight.  What a super day that was for you all.

Well done.

Looks like a great time was had by all and the local Bird / Squirel population are in for a good winter too.

The last time I tried to make a nice little birdhouse like those it looked like Homer Simpson had made it.

Brendan,

Sorry I missed your bit somehow, I could not agree with you more about the do gooder situation in the UK. CRAZY. Kids are not allowed to be Kids anymore, it's back to the good ol' days here, Parents and children are together all the time and the Kids are VERY polite and well behaved.....a breath of fresh air.

Man, that was GREAT! You could see the genuine excitement on those kids faces. I hope some of them grow up to be woodworkers or wood turners for a hobby or better yet a profession. So refreshing to see young people actually MAKING something and not playing with an X box or something. Well done and thanks for the photos!! smiley=thumbsup.gif

Great pics, Roger.  smiley=thumbsup.gif  The smiles say it all.

Y'all sure have different shuttle buses in Alabama than we do here in California, though. Ours have tops and windows and everything.  Grin

Vaughn, We actually had 2 of the shuttle buses and the new model came with a top, but no side windows yet.

The man that owns this with his sister is a member of the local art guild.  They spend a lot of money collecting and refurbing old farm equipment, out building etc.  They even have a own room 1800's model log frame school house on the property.  The farm is open a limited number of days each year.  The sad part about this is that all of the locals did not take advantage of the openings this year.  They cancelled all field trips due to money problems even though there were no charges for the farm trip.  One day there would probably be worth 20 days in schools.
