Why yet another woodturning site when there are already quite a few - like this one - that feature videos? How are you going to drive people there?
A comment on the video: 100 grit sandpaper on Cocobolo? That'll leave some awfully big scratches. Personally I never use grits below 220 for sanding; only for shaping. Just my 2˘ worth . . .
That's an interesting philosophical question. Why another web site with a turner showing their work? Partly self promotion, and partially ability to control all of the content. I'd like to add a feature, for example, where viewers can leave comments specific to each video. But I take your point about duplication of effort...
You also bring up another good point, which is that I never identified the wood I turned in the demos! Although I used cocobolo for the WD article, the wood in the videos is thinwin, a relative of wenge. I'd never turned it before and it didn't seem to cut as cleanly as cocobolo, which is why I started with a fairly course grit. I
hate sanding, so if I can start with a finer grit, I do. But I'm impressed that you usually start with 220--well done. I often start with 150, mostly because I hate backing up a grit or two to remove scratches. And, I'm usually very pleased with the finish quality by the time I get the piece off the buffer.
