Kokopelli Cutting Boards
Dec 15th, 2009 at 6:17am

Here are two of three cutting boards I've made recently with a lot of help from my buddy Pete Simmons in Florida and his laser inlay skills. I had someone inquire about buying a similar kokopelli board I made a couple years ago, but I didn't have any more, so we made three. They are made from curly maple, walnut, cherry, and purple heart, with mahogany inlays. Sanded to 600 grit and soaked with my standard plain ol' mineral oil. A quick shot of Howard Feed N Wax, and they were done. Sorry the pics aren't the best...I was in a hurry and didn't get out the photo rig.

We did one left-hand model and two right-hand models. The left-hand one sold, so the remaining two will travel to the shows with me until they're sold. I just planed, cut, glued, planed, and sanded some boards. Pete did all the hard parts by handling the inlay.

Very nice boards.

I don't have any lasers handy, but it might be worth cutting in the shape with a Dremel and filling it with Turquoise or Malachite or something . . .

With a good steady hand, the Dremel approach would work. My Dremel skills are real weak, so I let Pete and his 'Atomic Scroll Saw' do the hard work. Here's a close-up of one of the inlays, and a close-up from another board we did a few years ago. (The older board said "Mountain Air" in fancy script lettering. The curlicues on the "A" are about 1/16" wide.)

Darn nice boards and one heck of a nice layout of the various woods/designs.
