It is ugly, nasty stuff and has been put on the international "Do Not Turn" list.  I happen to be government certified for the task of eliminating this wood from the planet.  If you will haul it to my shop I will be glad to absorb the customary fee that I collect for providing this service.   Roll Eyes

Get all you can get your hands on.  Every piece that I've ever seen has been beautiful.  You're gonna love it.

Sorry to jump on the thread, but does anyone know what use I can come to, for Palm trees....it's like balsa wood, light, turns very well, then warps, cracks and goes in the bin. Any ideas out there ??????? I can get loads of it.... Cry

DNA = DeNaturedAlcohol
Unless your into genes and such.
Palms are a hairy wood, actually more of a tightly bundled grass. Their makeup is what lets them get so tall and sway to and fro.
You need to really stiffen up the wood or stabalize it. I tried a couple of pieces and gave up. You might have better wood or better success.

Leo,

DNA, you probably won't find it under that name here.  Methylated Spirit is the same thing but it can stain wood a bit blue so I use Surgical Spirit instead, same stuff.

Leo,
We tend to forget where others live & you being from the UK you don't know what we call things. So your not that dim or maybe you really are either way you fit right in here.  Grin

Sorry about the naming Leo, Take into account what Ted said as I have no experience with Palm. But I will rough turn a piece and leave it 10% as thick of its diameter, then soak it in the DNA for a day or two. The DNA replaces the water in the wood. I put it in double paper bags and weigh the bag once a week till the weight stabilizes. Then I finish turn the piece and it will not crack any more. Every wood reacts a little differently to the procedure. But its all a learning experience, I AM ENJOYING THE RIDE....Give it a shot, if you have alot of Palm, there has to be an answer.....experiment and keep notes... Wink

If you can't afford the spirits you can try 1/2 cheap dish-washing detergent and 1/2 water. Mix up about 4L of each in a container big enough to accommodate the displacement. Let the wood soak for two days then turn it. I might suggest that you wipe off the excess b4 spinning.  Smiley
