Hello America
Jan 3rd, 2010 at 5:14am

Hi
Started watching the New Yankee Workshop a number of years ago, got completely carried away, lots of projects that didn't include turning, now I need some legs (who doesn't at 74) my lathe hardly used is now ocupying centre stage in my workshop and i'm struggling, mainly on cutting coves and beads in oak, the videos I have found to be a great help.

Hi Gordon,

And welcome.  I'm just across the ditch from you but these guys grabbed me and I haven't managed to escape yet.  They aren't too bad but, sometimes, their English is a bit strange.

Welcome Gordon,

Have you tried practicing on a softer or even wet wood, to get the hang of the tools ?? it's a lot easier and cheaper in wood and the tool wear.Try watching some of the videos on this site, or go to you tube and search for bobham5, he's on here and goes into great detail on all sorts of turning and it's free......the best price in town.

EX England......too expensive and cold......

What Leo didn't mention - you'll also need a good quality raincoat and waterproof walls.  Cool

Over the past weeks I have been practicing cove cutting using my spindle gouges with some success, I no longer take pieces out of the beeds and am able to burnish using the gouge bevel, when I came to turn my table legs I copped out and decided to use my scraper rather than the gouge due to the cost of the oak, next time I will use my gouge.
Thanks everyone for your advice.
