Greetings from the middle of the Pacific!!!
Jan 31st, 2010 at 8:30pm

Hi all. I'm Josh.
I am from Memphis, TN but currently I call Okinawa, Japan home. When on active duty in the Marines I fell in love with a Local and never left. I have been turning for about a year (learned from Google) mainly pens trying not to get too much going at once. Now I am moving up to bowls and duck calls and basically everything else my wife thinks is interesting. Just here hoping to find help on some problems and maybe in time be able to help someone else. I haven't found anyone here (in Okinawa) who is a professional turner so I am stuck to the internet, books and videos.

We do have another member located on your side of the lake.  Stuart Ablett is in Tokyo.  He might be able to make connections to put you in touch with local turners.

Welcome to this not so little corner of the vortex.  There is no escape.

Welcome Josh!

Yes, I'm in Japan, but Okinawa and Tokyo, while in the same country are VERY far apart, think Florida and Alaska  Grin

I do not know any turners in your neck of the woods, but if you ever get up to Tokyo, drop me a line and come by for a visit.

Cheers!

Thanks for the welcomes.

Ron, to answer your question NO there are no duck geese or anything much other than crow, random sea scavengers and the small non-game birds here to hunt. Either way the only thing I know of here to hunt is wild boar and from what I hear it is only primitive weapons (bows and spears). I have a good friend back in the states that is an avid duck hunter so I will be making most of the calls for him. I am starting with some kits ordered from THO Game calls they seem to have an ok selection for the reeds and so forth I just don't have all the jigs yet. When I get one made I will post it for you I just started on it this weekend.

Stuart, I know thats a long puddle to jump to get there but the same to you if you ever find your way to Okinawa give me a shout. Would love to be able to have someone to talk to and get pointers from in person.

Speaking of in person, Anyone from the greater Memphis area? I will be going back there in June for about a week and would love to get some pointers to bring back with me.

Thanks again all!!
Josh

Josh I look forward to seeing your calls and It would be great to hear them  some time. I need to get some tooling yet to turn some calls looking at this summer to get into that so I can use them next Fall.

Buck, you might want to let the folks there on THO know that the links for the two turkey call videos are broken.  Other than that it is a good looking site.
