Herb,
You just made me remember we have a member who needs to sell everything & he's only like 1 state away from you also he's got a whole lot of stuff for a very good price. For starters a Jet 10-14 like Dave has. The members name is  JR Horsley it's in the classified section.

Check it out.    Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register

Very true. I took you at what you said you didn't have a lot to spend I figured this would get you turning using a good lathe. I also use a Jet mini non-vs lathe & changing speeds only takes a matter of seconds.

I was impresed with the jet12" swing. The speeds where
270-4200 rpm. now that sounds like it would work well.

The Jet 1220VS is a work horse.  I have had mine for 18 months and love it.  It is quiet, the live center makes more noise than the rest of the lathe.

Herb,
It does say 12" over the bed but it's more like 11-3/4"
It's exactly 6" from the center of the spindle to the bed you do need some room for the wood to spin.

Is there a way to make the Jet 14x42 turn slower than
450 rpm? Be nice to get it down to 150 or 200 rpm, and have the extra size & power of the 1 hp. That would be perfection...

Hi Herb,

A crude, but effective, method to get slower speed from the 1442 is to push the lever on past the lowest setting which will give you a bit less speed.  Some folks drill a hole to locate the pin, other just use a bungie cord to hold it down.

I think my 1442 goes down to 370 at lowest speed and I can get it to run slower using a bungie.  I don't know the exact speed but it can be worth the bother.

The Jet 14" is variable by use of variable pully arrangement called a Reeves drive.  It has been prone to problems. (to put it mildly)

What exactly is wrong with the Reeves drive on the 14x42?
Is the Reeves drive on the other Jets?
The seller of the 14x42 jet as sold it, but he said he never had a bit of trouble out of his 14x42.

As long as a reeves system is maintained, by that I mean keep clean and all set screws are keep tight their isn't anything wrongs with them, but on a wood lathe from my own experience, they have a tendency to work lose and wood dust and shavings will get into the working's of a reeves unit. At one speed the upper pulley is closed and the lower is open, then when you change speeds they swap directions and with all this movement the set screws will work lose from time to time.

With the pulley's always opening and closing, dust will get down in between the pulleys and if you don't keep them blown out they will start to wear which will cause the interlocking pulleys to wear and cause them to become lose and sloppy between them selves. The biggest problem with reeve pulleys on a wood lathe is their made from pot aluminum and if their not in an enclosed area, shaving and dust will find a way in and then you got problems...

Theirs a big differences between a step pulley system VS a reeve pulley system, the step pulley has no moving parts to gum up, but they still have set screws that need to be checked from time to time cause vibrations will cause them to work lose as well.
