Got a kick out of that Bob.  Been there, done that.  Truth is good for beginners to see so that they don't think old pros like yourself are perfect all the time.  So many times people see the finished piece but never get to see the practice pieces that got you to the finish piece.

I still trust you, Bob.  smiley=thumbsup.gif

I like the way you stop and think (and explain what you think) as you are working on a piece.  It helps me from building up my DAMHIKT list, if only a little.

There is a name for what happened. It`s called a senior moment, I have them with out trying.

Great video, made me feel better about mine.

Well, I think I got it too thin.  Grin That's comedy gold right there.

Great compilation, Bob. The router table "incident" was a bit scary (I had a sneaking suspicion that was gonna happen), but it's a good lesson for others to see in action.

Hi, Chuck:
I was routing a dovetail groove that needed to be centered on the edge of the board.  To ensure that it was centered I made on pass with one face of the board against the fence and then a second pass with the other face of the board against the fence.  The problem was that the original fence setting was too close to the bit.  I had measured as close as I could to get the center of the bit the same distance from the fence as the center of the board, and I thought I had erred on the side of having it further rather than closer but the results show that I had it too close.

On the first pass the bit is cutting on both sides so the forces are balanced and there is no problem.  If my set-up had actually been the way I thought it was then on the second pass the bit would only have been cutting on the cheek of the groove that was away from the fence.  Since the cutting edge of the bit is moving from left to right on that side then I would be pushing the board against the rotation of the cutting edge, just like pushing a board through a table saw against the rotation of the blade, and everything would have been fine.

Since the fence was actually too close to the bit then when I went to make the second pass it was only cutting on the cheek of the groove that was between the bit and the fence.  That side of the bit is moving from right to left, the same direction I am feeding the board.  It is exactly the same thing as trying to rip a board on the table saw by feeding it from the back of the saw to the front.  The cutting edge of the bit grabbed the board and force fed it through, yanking it out of my hands.  I was quite fortunate that my hands did not get dragged into the bit.

Take care
Bob
