Hi Everybody ! Want to Learn to Turn Flutes !

Hi Friends ,
I live in the big town of Laurinburg NC.  I currently make rimblown flutes like the Anasazi and Mohaves. I am wanting to do transverse flutes also.I currently do most of my flutemaking using a router to rout the bore and shape the exterior.. I picked up a lathe at a great price and want to become familiar with it and start turning some with it. Any help or ideas on basically turning a piece like a hollow tube with a 7/8" bore will be greatly appreciated . I need help with selection of tools, jigs and set ups also ..Thanks a Bunch. I know I'll learn a lot here!!                                    Blessings ,Mike

Hi Mike,
I visit this site on occasion. I've made a few two chamber flutes and the president of the local woodturning club is a quite accomplished bagpipe maker. He uses drills like these Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register to drill the bore. You can search ebay for the size you need. This type of drill is hollow and you blow air through it to help cool and for chip removal. That "D" type drill will work but they get hot and don't hold the edege very well. For the two chamber flute it is just as easy to rout the bore and slow air chamber. If you can't find a 7/8 drill you can compensate for bore variations by changing your note hole diameter. I use homade cones for mounting the flute on the lathe.Hope this helps. Here is a link to my flutes  Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register
