Hi from Canada.
Feb 21st, 2010 at 5:11pm

Hello Folks!

Just thought I'd pop in and say "Hello".

I picked up a lathe a while ago and its been sitting idle in the basement while I built a little workshop. I don't really have any turning (or woodworking) experience but I did just finish a hands-on intro course with Kurt Hertzog.

I'm hoping to get into pen turning... plus I'd like to do some bowls, spindles, etc. I work in IT - so it will be nice to have something tangible to show for my efforts.

Segmented turning looks really cool but I think it will be a while before I try that.

Anyway, I look forward to picking your brains.  Shocked

Cheers. smiley=beer.gif

Thanks for the welcome!

I actually just placed an order for a bunch of pen blanks and kits from a local supplier so I look forward to posting some pics of my botched work.  Shocked

Welcome Rafael.

It's not "botched work" we call it "design opportunities"  Cool

Custom firewood.

I think that will probably be my specialty for a while.

Well I had my first "design opportunity" today.

I ordered a bunch of blanks and hardware for some pens, bottle stoppers, and coffee scoops figuring it might be nice to actually try my hand at making "something" until I get inspired to be more creative.

They were all out of the mandrels for the bottle stoppers.

I decided to leave the comfort of my office and head out into the factory and fine the production supervisor - he sent me to the local hardware store and then spent about 10 minutes showing me the intricacies of a metal lathe.

Here's a pic of the stopper, and the mandrel I made out of some scrap aluminum. I drilled, tapped and threaded it using a chuck in the end stock and put in a set screw with the same thread as the stopper. I turned the other end down so it will fit in collet end of my pen mandrel so I can mount it in the headstock.

It took me way too long to make... but I was going slow. Still, I think it turned out ok and now I don't have to wait for a mandrel in the mail.

Nicely done Rafael, ya did good and saved a few buck, as long as your set screw is turning true, you got it made, it'll work perfect for making bottle stoppers, have fun and don't forget to post pictures.

Just remember that any of your tools will turn away material from the aluminum mandrel.  It is almost as soft as wood.  Also, do not turn with a MT like that without either using the tailstock, or a drawbar to hold it in the spindle.  Otherwise you could have an IFO (Identified Flying Object).  Can you say OUCH!

I thought about that on the drive home. Luckily I turned it the same diameter as the pen mandrel - so I should be able to use the pen mandrel as a restraining rod - or if its not long enough I can pick up a length of rod and thread it.

One of my "wish list" items I may pickup shortly is a collet chuck which is threaded 1"x8tpi, that would be a better mounting solution anyway.
