my homemade vacuum chuck

hey everyone,

this is a vacuum chuck i recently made. i am by no means taking credit for this design, though. i want to thank ron sardo and bob hamilton for their input on the site. i just took alittle from each of them, and this is what came out. hope you enjoy. by the way, this is my first video, and remember the camera adds ten pounds, so be kind. Good one, Brian!  I took the liberty of adding the tags to make the video window appear directly in your message.

I note that you make no mention of a bypass air flow bleeder hole.  I got away with not having one for almost a year before the bushings wore out in my first shop vac.  I can't say for certain that it was the lack of a bleeder hole that made the motor bushings fail, since it was an old, inexpensive shop vac in the first place, but I really have not noticed any difference in the "grip" at the chuck since I drilled a 1/4" bleeder hole when I got my new shop vac about 2 years ago.  If it does not affect the grip there really isn't any reason to take the chance that it will hurt the vac.

Take care
Bob

hey bob,

i did not add a bleeder hole, honestly i forgot. however while it is running, i cannot hear a difference in the motor sound. when it "dead heads" it has a unique sound, but i don't hear one. maybe it has a leak that i don't know about. Smiley anyway, this is just version one, i would like to add a valve of some kind to regulate the vacuum, in the event i put a thin walled vessel on it. thanks for all your help!

Good work Brian.  A lot of us will appreciate the time you have take to post this because there are more than me about to start on a vacuum chuck project and having two videos (yours and Bob's) will make that a lot easier.

Thanks for taking the time to make the vid. I have made a mock up of a vacuum chuck, but a couple of things will be altered after watching yours. smiley=thumbsup.gif smiley=dankk2.gif

Awesome video, I may actually attempt to make one someday.  i would have liked to see a closeup of the bearing / threaded rod assembly, or better still see the video of making one from scratch, just to make sure I know 100% how you did it.  Thanks for posting.

Brian,
Thanks, I can't afford a gast pump right now but I really need a vacuum pump set up. I have exactly the same stuff as you even the same Rigid vacuum cleaner.

Question:

where the hose connects to the lamp rod did you use a hose clamp?

also did you do like Bob did with the bypass hole?

i did not use a hose clamp, i found that the threads on the lamp rod acted like little barbs to hold the hose in place sufficiently. of course if you want to use one, it wouldn't hurt a thing. as for the bypass hole, i forgot to add one, but as i listen to the vac it doesn't sound like it is dead heading to me. i might be losing air somewhere that i don't know about. if it did sound like it was, i would certainly add one though.
