Frank, I'm not so sure your ShopSmith is the tool to use either. Unless yours is a lot different than mine, the slowest speed on it is still about 500 rpm's. Still too fast for the large Fostner bits. This is the precise reason I went ahead and bought a bench top drill press from HF. The model I got had a larger swing than their "best" press. Sure would have loved to get the model with the articulating head, but its bottom speed was too fast too. I think I have mine set to 170 rpm's and it seems to do just great.
