New video finally: Turning a Cube on the Bias
06/11/10 at 08:41:31

Hi:  I have uploaded a new video series to Youtube about turning a small bowl from a cube mounted diagonally.  The playlist is available at:  Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register

I haven't added annotations yet and will be away for the weekend so hopefully I will get some in next week.

The bowl was turned from Honey Locust:

Really great video Bob, dankk2  thumbsup I went and put a cube on the lathe and am now in the process of finishing the bowl, one thing my mind can not comprehend is that how can you turn something that has 4 sides all ways and yet comes out with a 3 pointed bowl. I just turned it and still can't understand it. can someone explain? thanks, Dirk Huh

Dirk,

A cube has 8 corners. One is cut off to make the tenon and the opposite one is cut off to start the inside of the bowl.  So, imagine the cube on the lathe held between the tenon corner and the opposite 'bowl' corner.  That means there are 6 corners when you revolve the bowl.  When you are making the outside of the bowl you cut away the three corners at the tenon end which leaves the three corners at the front which become the ends of the wings.  I think.

Cool "How Too" Bob, thanks for your time, I enjoyed it very much. Sometime depending on where you place your hands/fingers... makes my skin crawl, but I keep right on watching, nicely done.  thumbsup

Brendan,

I knew that.  At least in my mind I did but you put it in words great.

I guess now I have to try it.

Bob,

Thanks for another great video!  I always learn something about turning when I watch these.  It may be totally unrelated to the subject.  Thanks again.
