Thank God for my wife
Jul 7th, 2010 at 6:23pm

Last night I got home about 6:30 pm & my wife called me in to the living room, she heard a buzzing & smelled plastic burning. Well we checked all around & she noticed that the GFI plug where the A/C is plugged in was getting black & it was hot. I went downstairs & tripped the breaker. after that the buzzing went away. I got a new GFI plug before work & put it in. Thank God for my wife's hearing (like a bat) & sense of smell (like a dog) it would have been a very bad night for us if something bad happened.

Only you, Chuck, would think that comparing your wife to a bat and a dog was a compliment.   Shocked

Seriously, that was very fortunate.  I am happy that went so well, under the circumstances.

Cathy beat me to it. If I called my ol' bat a dog, there'd be a beatin' tonight for sure. Grin

Glad to see you got it found and fixed before it could get worse.  smiley=thumbsup.gif

An A/C unit.  That in itself is a no-no.  High amperage equipment can easily overload the circuitry in a GFI outlet.  If you need GFI on a circuit with heavy draw, you should instal one of the Breaker type units.

Jim,
I did pick up a AFCI (arc fault circuit interrupter) I just got to research to see if it's different to install then a regular breaker.

Chuck your lucky my Batdog heard it to late and my inline water heater went up in flames last week.  I'm waiting for the replacement to fly in from Texas.
As for the breaker It's the same except you most tie the ground wire it to the bar.

No chuck basically the unit was fried

I got to paint the wall but other than that, it's ok.  The unit sprung a leak and wet the board, the board shorted out and it took some time to trip the breaker.
Construction here is basically concrete so there was no wood to burn(wood is for turning).  I'll be following your footsteps and changing the breaker to a AFCI.

Ha!

Too bad I just sent his package of wood yesterday - I could have put in a little "surprise" from one of the creatures around the house, and told him it was a special burl!
